DOBYNS RODS

Post by bigjosh15 »

I hear very highly about Dobyns Rods. Constantly people tell me to buy Dobyns rods. So I did a little research on them and I see that they are outstanding rods. I am thinking about buying one for flippin, but I don’t know exactly which one to get.

Josh, it is much like buying a shirt..I can tell you the size and style and manufacturer I get my shirts from, but that doesn't mean they will fit you or your style..Flipping rods are much the same..I currently have 4 different ones and all are great..But they may not be the right one for you..If you get the chance borrow one of the models you are considering and see if it is indeed what you want..Generally speaking I prefer at least a 7 1/2' model..An 8 footer might even be better..Of those you listed, I am sure you would not be disappointed with any of them..There are many great flipping rods made and Gary certainly has an example of some of the best..

Dobyns Rods are sweet:

The newer Gen series are so sensitive you can feel your line vibrate through the guides into the blank and your hands as you work your bait. The newer models are lighter, more sensitive, balanced you name it. But with all of his rods you need to put the rod in your hand and feel it check the balance and so on. I have 5-Dobyns Rods and their paired with different reels because they all feel diff , with diff reels so I pair them to my own liking.

Josh,

You really cannot go wrong with either the 765 or the 766 Flip, both will do the job........

Hi Josh. They really sell about the same. One does not stand out more than the other. Lately the 765 is getting the nod. I don't know why, just lots of guys talking about it. I personally like the 766 better. It's just a personal choice. The 6 is just a hair stiffer in the tip, and loads with more power. The 805 has a great following too. Heck now I've got myself confused :D :D Thanks for checking out the rods.

Speaking of confusion, when folks ask about flippin rods I'm never sure if they really mean
flippin or pitchin. Assuming you really mean flippin, Mr. Dobyns which of your rods do you recommend for pitchin the delta?

I have both the 765 and 766 and I can tell you that I punch and flip with both. For the last month I have been fishing the delta with a 1.5 weight on both sets ups. They both work great. I like the 766 a little bit more in the heaver weeds. But all in all you can't go wrong with either one you choose.

Josh if you want lets go fishing and you can play around with both set ups and get the one you like best or just get both :D . Just send me a pm!

Many guys pitch with their flippin sticks. You still need a powerful rod to pull them out of the trash. I see a lot of 735C and 736C for guys that want a little shorter rod for pitching. I even call these two pitchin sticks, but I use a 766 Flip most of the time myself. Confused :D :D

I loving this thread. I'd love to hear your guy opinions about reels for the above mention rods...

765...
766..
805..
736c..

I'm getting a reel for my new 736c and have a spare 400a cardiff, but maybe an abu garcia stx or ...?

765 ( I have 2 ) both have Revo STXs
766 - Dont' have one at the moment, but it would have an STX
805 ( I have 2 ) both have STXs
736 / Revo STX

The STX has an amazing drag, I have STXs on every 5 and 6 power rod.

All of my 2/3/4 power rods have Zillions/Fuegos, and other Daiwas.

Can't beat the STX for heavy cover situations.

Alex
My favorite reels and rods
Punching: Diawa Zillon 7to1. Steez 8ft flipping stick or a Dobyns 805
Flipping and Pitching: Shimano Core 7to1 reel. Dobyns 765, and 735
Spinnerbaits: Shimano Chronarch reel. Dobyns 733, 743
Cranking: Loomis 752 or Dobyns 805cb
Jigs: Diawa Steez reel. Dobyns 704, and Steez 701 MH
Spinning reels would be Diawa Steez or the Diawa Fuego's.

Nice selection.

I've been hearing about "Diawa Zillon " reels, but I haven't seen them yet.

I really like your list, particularly for Delta.

I will challenge on one item though, For 3/8-3/4 oz crankbaits/ ripbaits the 704cb glass Dobyn's is crazy good.

The 805 CB RM is on my wish list but its a deep diver or really big ripbait rod. <---- hoping x-mas is good this year

I've been buy either Abu garcia Revo S, or Shimano Sahara's mostly. I also have a couple cardiff 400a's, plus a 2-3 odds or ends.

Just about any reel will still balance out on these rods. Unlike in the past where one company dominated the casting reel sales, there are many good ones now. I personally think the Daiwa Zillion is the best casting reel I've ever used period. I like them better than the Steez. They are not the lightest (though not bad) but smooth, cast awesome, and dependable. I abuse them, never oil them, just fish them. My 2 cents.

I interviewed Gary after the US Open (Sports Report website). I asked him about the rods and company. He mentions, "sensitive balanced rod is fun to fish with and you’ll actually catch a lot more fish."

...Very true.

He mentions more about his rods, plus more details about his win at the US Open. You can check it out here.

I just recently tried the 8' flippin stick and was surprised how much more water I could cover with that extra reach. You wouldn't think 6 more inches would make that much difference. Only fished it half a day, so I don't yet know if it will get tiring for a whole day, but I wasn't the least bit tired at noon. Used a Daiwa Zillion (left handed), 65# braid and Danny Miller's new 1.5 oz punchin weight.

So I have made up my mind, I am going to get the 765 flip, and put a Abu Garcia Revo SX on it. Then once I get enough money I am going to get a few of them. Thanks everyone for the advice.

Josh. If you want, next time I see you, you can try mine out, and get to really "feel" it before you buy it. Maybe go fishing and you can use it for the day.
