I've been out of fishing for awhile. I am learning new techniques and baits based on newer lines and gear that weren't available 10 years ago.
For example, the last time I purchased shimano baitcasters, (Curado and Calcutta) only Mono line capacities were included in the specs.
Today, I'm trying to find a reel best suited to use with #65 Power Pro. Since this is for tossing the ubiquitus Punkers for stripers I feel that 150 yards in more than enough. With that said, I like the 301 size reels in Curado and the value reel Cardiff.
Capacity of the 300s is at or around 120 yards for PP #65. Are these conservative capacities and do these reels actually hold more, perhaps upwards to 140?
Thanks.
p/s I have 400 size Calcuttas and I would really like to use 300 size if I'm going to hold the reel most of the day.

Re: Shimano Reel and 65# PowerPro
Our spec for 65# Power Pro on the Curado 300 is 120 yards. Our spec is what we measured by filling the spool.
You can almost clear the spool on a long cast with the Lunker Punker using 65#

I figured the majority of the line would be outbound......bantam1 wrote:Our spec for 65# Power Pro on the Curado 300 is 120 yards. Our spec is what we measured by filling the spool.

A 400 size reel is at least more useful in other applications, so I guess that answers my question.
Out of curiosity, what is the 'target market/species' for the Curado 300?
Thanks.
Re: Shimano Reel and 65# PowerPro
Largemouth, Muskie, inshore species, offshore species...pretty much anything. We never design a reel to target one species of fish really.
The 300 is what I use to fish the LP and I love it. I know more than one person using it for the same thing and all have been more than happy with it.

Thank you.
The 300 size is really nice.

Re: Shimano Reel and 65# PowerPro
I am getting ready to spool up a Curado 301 with 65lb powerpro. How much mono. backing is considered sufficient?
Thanks

Thanks

Re: Shimano Reel and 65# PowerPro
You just need a few yards or you can just tape the spool arbor and tie a knot with the Power Pro.
Re: Shimano Reel and 65# PowerPro
On the 300 which I throw exclusively for a punker. Tape your spool and go directly to the spool with your PPro. Seriously, this year there are some really big fish out there. We I had one take me to the bottom of the reel myself. Thank god for good hooks, and HyBYpass 109 on a 19'
Ranger. One fish I got in, the other, pulled off! Big fish, fast current, don't wait! Go get em right then! Don't try and play with these big girls!
