Anybody been to El Salto and/or Bacarac, Mexico?

Post by Big Ed »

I am planning a trip to travel to Mexico this coming February 2010 to experience Lake El Salto for two days and Lake Bacarac for four days. Looking for some advice.

I chose the last day of Sunday February 28th to travel to Mexico and spend Monday March 1st and Tuesday March 2nd fishing El Salto and then Wednesday March 3rd thru Saturday March 6th fishing Bacarac and then coming home Sunday. Six days chasing hawgs. The full moon falls two nights before we arrive and my way of thinking was this should be the full speed pre, spawn and post and our best shot at some big fish. Is this a good time of year?

My partner and I are after quality not quantity. We want to have nice accomodations and good food with cold refreshments and everything inclusive at the best price. It is our first trip to Mexico for bass so any information and suggestions would be really appreciated.... best baits, lures and presentation?

Will I need swimbaits?
Can i fish jigs effectivly?
Can i fish senkos effectivly?
Can i fish texas rig worms effectivly?
Can i fish creatures, ikas, brush hoggs effectivly?

Thanks; Big Ed!

Sounds like the makings of a great trip. Doing a Mex trip has been on my wish list as well. Check out the lodge's web site for past trip sucesses. Most of them will tell you what baits and tackle to bring as well if you need additional clothing, rain gear, etc. If you are going for quality, lean towards large lizards, brushhogs, and supersized baits. Standard size jigs, Ikas, T-rigs will get you nice fish, but you need to go big for those heart stopping hawgs.

Oh, from the stories and reports I've read, you will NOT go hungry or thirsty. heheh

My buddy has gone to Baccarac for the past three years running.
He says it's a better big fish lake than El Salto.
Each year it's been a different bite.
Big baits.
7" Senkos, wacky rigged with 4/0 heavy wire hooks the first year, burned across flooded brush with a super fast jerkbait retrieve. And swimming a jig with a big trailer.
Chatterbaits with Zoom horney toad trailers were the go to bait the second year.
This last year, super flukes (8"+) were the ticket.
His trip last January he said he struggled for the first time. He had slow days, with four or five fish a day, but all big, over 6lbs, and his last day, he had a 45lb limit, topped off by a thirteen and an eleven. And he was culling sixes and sevens, mostly on the giant flukes.
He said it was his best day ever, by far, and he's been fishing for bass for over thirty years.

I went to Bacarac over ten years ago. It was without a doubt the best bass fishing I have ever experinced in my over forty five years of bass fishing.

The most hard fighting fish I have ever caught...the people that work their take very good care of you.

Have Fun,

Thanks guys;

I received a few excellent PM's and it looks like we will be booking with Doug King at Pro Bass Adventures very soon. Several of his clients made contact with us and had great things to say about his organization.

Im still not sure if the first week in March is a good time for big fish. I hear the spawn comes when the water cools in late fall not when the water warms in the spring. Its kind of opposite from here in the states.

Anyways thanks for all of the advice!

Later; Big Ed!

Ed, Take 100 ct of lizards; green pumpkin blk/flk and top water; Spooks and Buzz Baits(Black/Red).
Carolina Rig lizards on the island tops and points for big fish.
Best five one day went 43.00 pounds on El Salto.
Never have made it to Bacarac....

Be careful right now in traveling that area there have been several murders of tourist by drug cartels in the Sonoloa area...El Salto.

I'll be making my first trip Feb 14th. The guy I'm going with goes three times a year. He caught 2 fish last year over 13 and countless numbers over 10. We are taking our own boat (no guide) and camping out. They set up your site and clean it everyday. I think he has it dailed. My number is 702/378-6947. I would give you all the info from the 14th-22nd. Oh yea Baccaracc.

Upgrade you trebles one size, and strong.
Those fish hit with a vengence. My buddy had one strighten out the stock #4 on a crank. He brought the hook home for me to see.
And nothing under 20lb test. The brush down there is manzanita, or some other really tough stuff, and you'll need stronger line.
