CHP Ticket
CHP Ticket
Anyone here ever get a speeding ticket while towing ? Just got 1 today on the way home from Casitas. 70mph on the 101 near Westlake. Just curious how much this will dip into the walet.
Re: CHP Ticket
max legal limit is 55mph....not counting traffic school my guess is 248.00.

Re: CHP Ticket
I was in court several days ago . Watched the judge hand out fines waiting on him to get up to S, the fines are not too bad, but the fees that are tacked on now hurt.
My fine was $385 but with added fees it came in at $ 785

Re: CHP Ticket
If you contest the Ticket, you may get it lowered but don't count on it. I work at DMV and you can believe that the Fines on most tickets that are over the Speed Limit are being hit with serious fines. They (the Courts) seem to be looking for $$$ and nothing more.
Life is short enjoy each and everyday!
Re: CHP Ticket
I always wonder how they come up with these fines. I bet its 2 guys in an office eating doughnuts and drinking coffee. One guy says to the other " He Al, how much you weighing these days?" Al replys " I dont know 200, 222." Ok good enough for me.RichThiel wrote:Right turn on Red light at HWY 4 to Laraul (Posted no right turn on Red) fine> $222.00 in Contra Costa County. PAID

Re: CHP Ticket
You'll fall into the 2nd bracket........1-9 over and 10-14 over. Look for the fine to be in the 400 + area. CHP is cracking down on vehicles towing over 55. They pretty much look the other way up to 61, after that, depends on what they are doing at the time and what the flow of traffic is. Any of the Interstates are more leinent than the state HYW's, but usually 61 is a safe speed to run. Good luck with the courts. I would try, but 15 over is a tough one to beat.

Re: CHP Ticket
Oh no they dont look the other way. Got a ticket while driving in my 18 wheeler. 60 in a 55 at the junction of 99 and 5 down south. Then the *** wipe had the balls to tell me to fix the vin plate on my trailer cause it had scratches and that it may not be readable after a while. Not my trailer talk to the company.
After that got a ticket for overweight at the scales there at the grape vine. Was at 80,010lbs while it was raining. I picked up like 20lbs of water must have been pooled on top of the trailer. Got a ticket for that and couldn't go any further till I was under 80000. Went out moved the truck and slammed the brakes. Big flood of water from the top of the trailer. Went back through and was at 79090lbs
California made out good that day. It was 350.00 for speeding and I never saw the overweight as the company paid that one. Had to go to traffic school. I was the only Truck Driver in the class and the instructor had no idea on anything about driving a big truck. Waist of time except I didn't get the point on my record.
California must be hurtin for 5 over the limit and 10lbs overweight during a rain storm. Guess im lucky I wasnt in Ohio! They were handing out tickets at 58mph on trucks.

Re: CHP Ticket
I believe the statistics show that in states with the two speed limit laws there are more accidents between big trucks and autos.
Chp wants us to believe that by slowing down the trucks we the truck drivers have less accidents.
The national statistics show that in accidents between autos and big trucks were there is a fatality the auto was at fault.
There are very few states that have these laws. Ohio, Illinois, Cal, Wa, and Ore to name a few.
I love Az and NM. 75mph baby once your half way over that bridge goin into Az floor it! Tx is 70 at day and 65 at night. I loved running I10 or I20 once I was out of this state it was money in my pockets at 75 and 70 mph

If you have a ball on your hitch, the plate may be visable/legible.
If you have a ball left on your bumper while not towing watch out!
Same for bolt on reciever tubes, that go on the bumper with a high ball.
Another dumb one to get a ticket for is license plate covers, those tinted things will get you ticket. But you will look cool.

Same with no front plate! There are so many little tiny things in the CVC that the cops can pull you over for. Most of it being chicken stuff and is just there IMHO to alow cops to check you out.

Re: CHP Ticket
The whole 55 while towing is nuts. At 55 you have semis riding your *** and traffic flying around you. I have allways stayed with the flow of traffic in the right 2 lanes, sometimes it's at 40 sometimes 70. I guess I'm lucky I've towed a boat this way for 20 years without a ticket. My first step is to go to the speedo shop tomorrow and get a certified speedo calibration print out. I am running different size tires and have never had it checked out. Maybe it will be in my favor maybe not. If I could knock 5 or 6 mph off it would be great.
Re: CHP Ticket
Guess I'm the only one here old enough to remember that California adopted the lower speed for trucks and trailers because of fuel economy and air pollution. It was not about accidents.

Re: CHP Ticket
Just check it with handheld GPS or Tom TOM etc...
I actually prefer towing at slower speeds. There are a lot of forces at work, that people don't notice. One time I went over a RR track too fast and literally snapped off my nylon transom strap! After that, I started being a bit more cautious vs. hauling --- everywhere.
A deer in the headlights, or a rockslide around the corner happens in the early hours. One morning on 12 I ran over a whole bunch of stove pipe parts!
But a choppy slowlane drives me nuts. I am thinking 505, its just a bouncing, horsey ride wreck.
My other pet peeve, is that people have no regard that you are towing.

You guys haven't even touched the tip of the insanity.....Did you know that legally an ambulance or other emergency vehicle is only allowed to go 10mph over the posted limit?
The company I work for also has limitation set on it for insurace which theoretically
limits me to 65.
Yeah right (best dr. evil imitation)

Re: CHP Ticket
A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80 mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-5, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw the CHP behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the Trooper's arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the Trooper walked up to the Corvette, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go." The old gentleman paused, then said, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back." "Have a good day, Sir," replied the Trooper.

Re: CHP Ticket
Now that was funny.
I tow at 65. I set my cruise control at 65 when I get on at LAX, at 4:00 in the morning, stay in the right lane, and haven't been bothered yet. On the way home, I never see 65mph. Too much traffic.
Last winter, I was in the third lane going north, doing over 65, passing the scales on the 5 by the 126 one morning early, and a CHP pulled up behind me and flashed his brights.
I moved over, and slowed down, and he went by, giving me a "don't do that again" look and wave.
I figured I'd used up my "get out of jail free" card that time, so I keep it at or under 65 now, and hug the right lane unless it's o'dark thirty.
As for big rigs and accidents, the problem is when they stay in the third lane, even when the fourth lane is open, because it's smoother, or they just don't want to change lanes as often for idiots merging, or slower trucks.
I know it's a pain, but they do make it more dangerous when they're in the third lane. They clog up the road, and lots of idiots speed by them on the right.
Now, going up the 5 to Pyramid, it is a nightmare with one truck doing 50 passing another doing 49, and needing a mile to do it.
And what's up with big trucks using the third lane coming back down south along the same stretch. The downgrade is posted 40mph for trucks, so they can't pass each other on that downgrade. But I see big rigs in both the third and fourth lanes, side by side, both doing 40 all the way down the grade.
That makes for a lot of danger as cars swerve to avoid them.
The road isn't that rough in the fourth lane, so I think that is just dumb.
A little common sense goes a long way on the road.

Re: CHP Ticket
The lane problem has to do with people merging without looking, while at the same time some idiot passes on the left leaving the trailering guy nowhere to go but squeezed.
I freaking hate it, and in towns it is often posted "through traffic left lanes" for that reason I believe.
I hate it while pulling the Bobcat or bassboat.
Soon as I get out of town, back to the right lane.

I know people who are merging have no clue. Most of the time they don't even look, and don't accelerate to speed until they've cut you off.
And even if you slow down to let one merge in front of you, the next one is going to try and shoulder hop you, too.
Pure fun.

Here is a long story made short as I could. The local police and code enforcement didn't like my 53 m38a1 rock crawler (a old military jeep). Anyway they were sighting my vehicle as abandoned in my drive way. I drove it every weekend and would almost always get a ticket leaving town. Stupid stuff like I had lap belts on instead of the 5 point harness I installed, or winshield rear mirror stuff the vehicle in 1953 didn't have. Code enforcement said it was an eye sore and unless everyone on my street had one it had to go. This was in old town so it wasn't ritzy or anything. So as I was moveing out i cabled it to a tree in my driveway. The police put not one but 2 boots on my wheels but left no ticket. Being a rubicon guy I happen to have a plasma cutter in my tow rig and an onboard welder in my jeep. I cut them off, carved them into a cock n balls, welded together and set in concrete right next to the driveway in my yard (my landlord helped, he was pissed to). Anyways I moved, and never heard another word.

Re: CHP Ticket
I thought we were spendy up here in Oregon. They just started a 45 dollar "process fee" (Tax) on top of all tickets. 1-10 over is now 142.00, 11-20 is 190, 21-30 is 287, and 31+ is 472. I think they are outrageous, and I write 'em. I give people 14 over and write at 15, unless I'm working a traffic grant, then it's give 'em 12 and write at 13. With the new surcharge, they'll be seeing a lot of 10 over tickets written for people doing 15/20 over. My personal opinion of under 10 over tickets(outside active school and construction zones) is they are written for revenue purposes, not safety...just my OPINION.
As far as laws go, California is great compared to up here. Oregon is one of the most criminal friendly states. It continues to spiral deeper into a bigger liberal bleeding heart crap hole. Here's one for you all. The court of appeals up here just ruled that if an officer reads a DUII arrestee the implied consent form, which is REQUIRED BY LAW, it is considered coercion and the evidence of the breath/blood/urine test or test refusal can no longer be used. However, if an officer does not read the form, the result can't be used either due to the officer not following procedure set by law. Go figure that sh#t out.
Sorry digressed a bit, I'm not a thread hijacker, really.

Re: CHP Ticket
Search the term "penalty assessment" for California and you'll see what we deal with - usually about a third or more of the total fine, added on to the top.

Really ??? well lets see here, First...........CHP won't write until 6 over unless reckless driving is involved Second.......overweight tickets arn't written in the rain unless the axle is over by 300#s or the load total is over 500#s. AND finally............Commercial license holders in Ca. are not permited to take Traffic School. Im just sayin'.......................

Re: CHP Ticket
Just did a quick read on all of the posts; I may have missed something. Last I heard, it is a felony if you receive a ticket for 20MPH or over; towing or not towing, whether the speed limit is 55, 65 or 70MPH. With that in mind, there would be no "traffic school" to get that one off your record.
As for the ball being removed from the hitch when not towing, the concern was that hitches that were not "Locked" with a keyed lock-pin had a higher potential to come off due to vibration, bounce on the road and fly into somebody's windshield or cause a driver to swerve. I can only imagine the havoc that would cause on any roadway on any given day.

20 mph over can be a wreckless driving charge added, not sure about felony as I never had that charged.drrakruz wrote:Just did a quick read on all of the posts; I may have missed something. Also 70-55=15 mph over, not 20. That was the original post, 70 mph when towing.
Re: CHP Ticket
Thank you for the math lesson. 90-70=20 MPH over; 85-65=20 MPH. Just throwing something out there for people to think about.afdean wrote:Also 70-55=15 mph over, not 20. That was the original post, 70 mph when towing.
A vehicle is a vehicle; speeding is speeding--It's all relevant.
While you're on it, would you like to add something else to my trailer hitch comment as well, just because that wasn't part of the original post either???

Re: CHP Ticket
Really? Wow I guess sitting on the side of the 99 I5 connector with that CHP Officer in his blue outfit was just my imagination and going to traffic school in San Mateo was just a bad dream and yes they do give overweight's anytime any weather. If they didnt why would they have the scales open in rain and snow. If there not givin out tickets why weigh the trucks? I guess I can just drive by the scales seein how there not givin tickets in the rain.CHP won't write until 6 over unless reckless driving is involved Second.......overweight tickets arn't written in the rain unless the axle is over by 300#s or the load total is over 500#s. CHP will give a truck driver a ticket in a heart beat as well as any other state trooper.
Re: CHP Ticket

Re: CHP Ticket
The commercial enforcement officers (truck cops) do. I see them all the time.Byron wrote: Since when does CHP wear blue?
As far as the weight issue, enough water to fill 2 standard (50 gallon) trash cans would weigh 834 lbs. If the top of the trailer is concave or it's a tarp it's not too hard to imagine that much weight up there.

Re: CHP Ticket
Whats your problem Byron? You tryin to say im a liar? Do you drive a big truck? If not STFU! From not knowing who a CHP Officer in blue is you havnt a clue about driving a truck!
Thanks Bryan that is correct. They are a whole different unit. Who do you think drive those Dodge pickups that are used for commercial enforcement?
