spots in Pedro

Post by D »

Anyone have any idea about the spots in pedro, I was up last thursday and caught several 9 to 11inch spots in an area that I havent seen them in before. Are they going to take over? Did DFG plant those I dont think so, or did the current population have a banner spawn and just are extending their range?

DFG does not plant bass. Spotted bass while similar to the LMB population can spawn as deep as 12-20ft or more. When you have fluctuations in water level in the spring the LMB suffer because they nest shalower.

more sucess for spotted bass = more spotted bass.

The BAG issue 2 for 2009 has a nice spotted bass article by Will Hesch.

You obviously haven't been to DVL during the spawn... 98% pure strain Florida LMB, spawning in 25-40 feet (crystal-clear water) is pretty normal from my experience.

Between the Florida largemouth planted $ 5000 plus worth every year, the Salmon and the un-seen huge Browns, no worry, the spots will not take over Don Pedro. Their are big ones in Don Pedro, but small schools of small ones waiting to be eaten.

I fish Pedro a few times a year for the past 5-6 years. Every trip I catch more spots than the last, and the last few trips, less smallies than ever before.

Don Pedro is going the way of Pine Flat, Millerton and every other lake they have put spots in, the LMB fishery will decline. DFG would be doing the fishermen a favor by eliminating the limit on Spotted Bass and making it mandatory to keep fish you have caught.
