FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
Which one could be used for both Punching and Flippin?
A Dobyns 765, or a 766
Or should I just get a Rod for Punching and a rod for Flippin?

Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
765 would be good ..the optium the 805 is only 6 inches longer. Check out the Chris Raza video on truebass.net with the miller punching weights.

Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
Josh, I don't know about the Dobyns, but I have the Powell 765, and I think it makes a good 'open water' flippin stick... But for punchin' or heavy heavy cover flippin, I would not use it... I would use something heavier. Even though the 805 is still a 5 power, I heard it is much better.
I have a mojo flippin stick that will handle 2oz... very good rod, just heavy to use all day. Very cheap.

The Dobyns 805 Flip/Punch is just what its name suggests. This rod is designed specifically for these applications. The 8' length is perfect for flippin', the 5 power rating allows it a soft enough tip to feel light bites and flip smaller baits when things get tough. The fast action on this rod loads up quick allowing the backbone to command awesome hook sets and dominating control of the fish even in the thickest of cover and is light enough to use all day without causing angler fatigue.
I own and have in the past used an earlier Dobyns designed 765 CRO for pithin'/flippin' and a 797 Mag Grass Lamiglas for punchin'. I have since retired both rods do to the versatility of the Dobyns 805 Flip/Punch.
Give this rod a shot and you'll never regret it.
Hope this helps and good fishin' to ya'

The 765 is a bit light for punching, but you could get away with a 766 for punching.
The 805 is the "Ideal" Punch rod, but certainly wouldn't be the rod I pick up for flipping a jig and such.
Punching - 80lb Daiwa Braid / Revo STX / Dobyns 805
Flipping - 65lb Braid / Revo STX / Dobyns 765
That's how I do it, and have pretty good results.

Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
When you get into the heavy vegetation, you gotta go with 6 or 7 power, the 5 just doesn't have the telephone pole-like qualities needed for punching.

Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
Ya I know that Im getting the Dobyns 765 once I get the money, I was just curious to know if punching would work with it. But know after the Chris Raza video i'm just gunna save my money and get both 765 and 805
Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
I am using the Dobyns 766 for punching & flippin. Does it give me the best stick for both uses? Probably not but I wanted to go with one rod for both techniques. I also felt more comfortable with the 7'6" length. Never had a problem feeling the subtle bites on the 766 vs the 765 (both rods are/were Gen 2 models).bigjosh15 wrote:Which one could be used for both Punching and Flippin?

Or should I just get a Rod for Punching and a rod for Flippin?
If it were a perfect world, I would probably have a separate stick for each. If that were the case, I would opt for a 765 & the 805

Re: FLIPPIN/PUNCHING
It is my opinion that the Dobyns 766 Flip would be the best rod to work for both flipping and punching as you asked. I am currently doing the same and have had no issues. I do plan on getting a 805 in the future. I believe you will also be very happy with the 766 flip.
