Need some Feed back on boat repair

Post by bassman1975 »

In March of this year I purchased a boat from a dealer. The boat is a 03 with a 200 opti on it. When I purchased it the motor had 250 hours on it. As of today it has 300 hours. I have been having alot of engine trouble. I took it into my local shop where I purchase this boat and they called me back a few days later and told me that one of the cylinders was frozen because the fuel inject. for that cylinder stopped working. So they are going to re bore that cylinder put a new piston/rings and injector for that cylinder. My question is they are charging me 3200.00 and some change for this. This seems way to high to me considering I have "heard" you can get a complete rebuild for this amount. Is this true? Now I am not going to mention the name of this dealer because they can't defend themselves, but listen this is a dealer I purchase a boat from and I feel as if I got screwed. I can understand if I purchased a used boat from a third party and had problems but not from a dealer. Can someone give me some feed back and help. Thanks

Bassman, I was an outboard mechanic for about 10 years. The total might seem high but remember to replace one cylinder you need to completely disassemble the entire engine. That means the power head comes off the mid-section and gets completely torn down. There is a lot of time involved in that, probaly about 20 hours of labor. The thing that surprises me is that they are not standing behind there used boat sale. I would think they would cover most of the cost since the boat was sold 6 months ago. Are they trying to say you might have caused the damage? Just my opinion. Sorry I cant give you a shop to goto since i am also from norcal.

Nope they don't stand by the used boats they sell. In fact after this repair I will never set foot back in the door. I have spent in the last 6 months over 3000.00 grand in gear. With a new boat comes new gear. I have talked with the guy who sold me the boat, the service manager and even the owner and they all gave me the same answer "well it's a used boat and thats the chance you take" funny because the guy that sold it to me told me the guy that owned it took sooooooooooooo good care of it and only use it on weekends and is a very well known in the industry. Well that was BS. All I know is there buisness is slow and I hope they go under for treating customers like this. Any way thanks and I know it's alot of work to do repairs.

It doesnt hurt to call around. There are a few places located in so cal. I recommend you try calling the Boat House of Anaheim, (714) 635-2628 ask for Tim. They treated me fair and Tim is a stand up guy. Run the issue by him and see what it should cost. Remember like other posts have said, this is labor intensive. You may have got the shaft from your dealer in buying the boat, hopefully you wont get it in repairing it. GOOD LUCK!

B&J Marine in Pomona. The place is a little dirty but they were pretty reasonable. Call ahead to set up an appointment.

Sounds like a costly lesson to be learned and not to do future business with the dealer. You should share the name of the dealer so others can be aware when dealing with them.

When buying used, an independent mechanic evaluation and inspection should be performed.

Always ask about warranties, even as you get your motor fixed.
