JIG ROD

Post by calworks »

Birthday is this weekend. Wife wants to get me something. I want another jig rod to complement my Dobyns

I want either the Powell 705 CEF or the 804 CEF

What are your preferences in THESE two rods

thanks for your comments.

First, which Dobyn's rod do you have?

Second, what are you fishing...deep football jigs, or flipping arky's or what?

...and shooting from the hip..assuming you had nothing at all I'd guess the 804 .

Dobyn's better jig rods are the 744 and 704, and 784.....guessing 4 power blanks rock the jig......GD told me the 784 was best for dragging a football jig...and I'm guessing an 804 might be similar.

sorry forgot that....I normally throw the football heads, 1/2 - 1 oz. My current Dobyns is the 704, love it but a bit pricey for me.

Would like to get a rod that would double for the smaller swim baits no larger than 1.5 oz.

Get the powell 804. It is the best all around rod ive ever fished. The tip is amazing. People say a shorter rod is more acurate when casting but this rod will change that opinion it casts so easy you forget its a 8ft rod. On top that it has plenty of backbone. I wish I had about 4 or 5 of them myself.

If you have a 704 I think an 804 would be a good addition to your aresonal. I started with the 804 and used my buddies 704 and had to get it. However the 804 I use primarily as a flip stick, punch stick etc... I like the tippier rods for throwing the smaller swimbaits. My favorite is my Lami 7' 5 pwr rod this thing slings baits and has the backbone to get da fish da boat.

If price is an issue take a look at Okuma GS-C-7111 MH, or lamiglas Exel XL7116C. These are good all around swimbait rods under $120. Expecting a jig rod to cast swimbaits with ease isn't going to happen, the action is too fast.

Thanks I actually have one of theose for my big SB, what I'm trying to decide is which jig rod to get, the 704 or the 804. Pro/cons of each. I already have the equiv. of the 703/704 in Dobyns, looking for a Powell. I'm kinda leaning towards the 804 because its rated for 1.5 oz baits and that will throw the smaller SB I have, the Okuma works great for the bigger one. I have a Powell 766 flippin stick and a 735 frog rod, so I only need two more rods...a jig and a senko/tex/topwater/sorta thing..LOL

I also have a 7'6" Okuma same rod only shorter. Not using it any more, like the 7/11 better. May have to sell the 7/6 since its only taking up space or maybe trade for a reel for the Okuma. we'll see

Thanks for the tip though

Both are great rods. I really like the 7'3" rods...I have a 734 and love that thing for 1/2 and 3/4 oz jigs. The 735 is sweet too!!! Great Striper rods too for fishtraps, bucktails, and other bulkier baits.
