Thanks Bryan that is correct. They are a whole different unit. Who do you think drive those Dodge pickups that are used for commercial enforcement?
A little touchy are we - I never called you a liar. I simply asked about the BLUE UNIFORMS and now your up on your high horse like a cry baby. So you seem to have the problem. Sorry if I never paid attention to who drives the black and white Dodge trucks. The original post was not about you and your semi's anyway. It was simply about a ticket while towing a boat, not about some Jackass driving an overweight semi.

I tow at 65. I set my cruise control at 65 when I get on at LAX, at 4:00 in the morning, stay in the right lane, and haven't been bothered yet. On the way home, I never see 65mph. Too much traffic.
Last winter, I was in the third lane going north, doing over 65, passing the scales on the 5 by the 126 one morning early, and a CHP pulled up behind me and flashed his brights.
I moved over, and slowed down, and he went by, giving me a "don't do that again" look and wave.
I figured I'd used up my "get out of jail free" card that time, so I keep it at or under 65 now, and hug the right lane unless it's o'dark thirty.
As for big rigs and accidents, the problem is when they stay in the third lane, even when the fourth lane is open, because it's smoother, or they just don't want to change lanes as often for idiots merging, or slower trucks.
I know it's a pain, but they do make it more dangerous when they're in the third lane. They clog up the road, and lots of idiots speed by them on the right.
Now, going up the 5 to Pyramid, it is a nightmare with one truck doing 50 passing another doing 49, and needing a mile to do it.
And what's up with big trucks using the third lane coming back down south along the same stretch. The downgrade is posted 40mph for trucks, so they can't pass each other on that downgrade. But I see big rigs in both the third and fourth lanes, side by side, both doing 40 all the way down the grade.
That makes for a lot of danger as cars swerve to avoid them.
The road isn't that rough in the fourth lane, so I think that is just dumb.
A little common sense goes a long way on the road.
MARK, SAME EXACT PLACE ON THE 5 FWY, I HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN... chp pulled up next to me, hit the overhead lights on me, i was in the #3 lane doing about 70 mph.... thought for sure it was going to be a ticket.... i pulled over and he hauled a** by me... had my heart going, and now i set the cruise at 62, and no problems so far..... and your post is sooooooo true

I was in traffic school in Ukiah and there was an 18 wheeler driver there. The instructor said, "So lets say you're approaching the green light and a driver shoots through the intersection on a red light from the left. What evasive maneuver would you make?" He asked the truck driver to respond.

The guy said, "None, I'm driving an 18 wheeler, its up to him to stay out of my way."

It got very quiet for a while and then the instructor asked a different question.

Greg, how long ago was it when you went to traffic school ? As of about 5 years ago they stopped letting commercial license holders take traffic school. I recieved a ticket last Oct ( On I-5 just North of 99, by the way) for 63 in a 55 in a SEMI and was not permitted to take traffic school. I was told it was no longer availabe to class A license holders in the state of Ca. I have had 2 tickets in the last 10 years and the 1st one I did Traffic School on line to remove it.

Byron, Sorry he got you mixed up with me. I been running up and down I-5 AND 99 along with the 7 Western states for over 20 years with a 45 and 48' flat bed. Guess I just didn't learn anything in that time. I don't call anybody a lier, I just let their statements do the talking. I hope I haven't affended anyone I just wanted to put out the ORIGIONAL warning that CHP was writing tickets to guys pulling boats at 61 and up. Those who are brave enough to run FASTER..............more power to you. If you dont have a Class A license, you can pay the fine, and take traffic school to remove it from your DVR. BUT you still PAY THE FINE !!!! I'm outa here...............................

Maybe this will help clear up at least 1 point.......

Judicial discretion
(1) A judicial officer may in his or her discretion order attendance at a traffic violator school in an individual case for diversion under Vehicle Code section 41501(a) or 42005(b); sentencing under Vehicle Code section 42005(a); or any other purpose permitted by law.
A violation by a defendant having a class A, class B, or commercial class C driver's license or that occurs in a commercial vehicle, as defined in Vehicle Code section 15210(b), is not eligible.

As far as the weight issue, enough water to fill 2 standard (50 gallon) trash cans would weigh 834 lbs. If the top of the trailer is concave or it's a tarp it's not too hard to imagine that much weight up there.
+1 water is VERRRRRY heavy. Gas is ONLY 6 pounds and it floats in water. Water is about 8.3 pounds per gallon.

Traffic school removes the ticket from you DMV record, but it is still reported to the Insurance Company, and goes against your record there.

That truck would have to be PARKED for a long time in a HEAVY rain to build up that much water. Not likely if your moving down the road tho. Even a tarped truck sheds water as it goes down the hwy....

If you go to traffic school and it is removed from the DMV record, your insurance company will not use it to rate. It has to be on the record to be rateable at Farmers. Accidents are handled as you have spoken.

One more "tip" for towing a boat..........STAY OUT OF THE FAST LANE. You are more noticeable when running in the hammer lane than in the slow lane. The CHP picks up on the cars in the fast lane quicker. ALSO........ believe it or not, the condition of your whole rig can make you more visable. CLEAN rigs get less attention. I know, some of you will say BS, but I have a friend who is a CHP guy at the scales and he says that a dirty truck is going to get his attention more as it is more likely to have defects than a clean one. Seems it has something to do with the driver having more awareness in his truck and the condition it's in. He also says that one of the things he looks for when watching trucks pass the scale is "clutter" on the dashboards... SO....... keep it clean, after all, it can't hurt. Don't try to make yourself MORE noticable seems to be the key here.

Mitch don"t get caught by the famous Freno polar bear he got me for 59 in a 55 one morning leaving town. Funny thing is he came in to the store one day and I asked him about it, all he said was " I was just doing my job", being the nice guy that I am, still gave him his discount :D :D

Another thing they are looking for is, lower units sticking out more than 3 ft. from the tail lights on the trailer. A friend of mine got a ticket for that coming back from McClure south of Merced . He didn"t have a red flag on it

Call the court up and tell them you want to do a "trial by deceleration" then do some research online on how to beat the ticket.
I beat a speeding ticket a few years back by doing this. I don't know if my argument had anything to do with it or the cop just didn't fill out the required paperwork on his end. Everything was done by mail which was nice. It's the best way to fight a ticket with a decent chance of winning since a lot of the time the cop doesn't even send in his side of the story to the judge.

Man that's a huge fine. Good Luck...

Got one a year ago October on I-5, $385.00 and since I was pulling a trailer it was written as a commercial vehicle; so I could not even go to traffic school. My first ticket in the last ten years and I cant get if off my record! Good Luck.

What really sucks is that you are now guilty untill proven innocent. All fines have to be paid first then they give you a trial date.
