Punching

Post by bigjosh15 »

I am trying to learn about punching more, I basically know everything I'm gunna be throwing
-Dobyns 805 FLIP
-Shimano Curado
-Power Pro 65 LBS.

-Reaction Innovations Double Wide Beaver
-Paycheck shirts
-Danny Miller Punchin Weight
My only problem is I don't know what hook to use, I have never Punched before so I'm not sure about which hook to use for the Double Wide Beavers?????

Any suggestion????

4/0 or 5/0 Paycheck punch hook. Can't go wrong with those.

Josh,
With a double wide go with a 5/0 hook. If you are gonna use a regular size go with a 3/0 hook. The paycheck hooks are some of the best out there. Tie a "Snell Knot" and all will be good. Be sure to peg the weight!!

peg the weight? I'm just dabbling with punching as well..and most of what I've seen is from the chris raza video. I didn't catch that he peged the weight or used the skirts. Are these optional? or are these improvements that have evolved since then?

btw. the Reaction Innovations double wide beaver, looks like an awesome bait..haven't caught any on it yet but great colors and considering the sucess of its smaller cousin...neat.

and the miller punching weights come with hooks..5/0 is probably the right size, but I think it comes with 7/0.

Acme do a search on here for punching "MARTY" has posted an extensive step by step detail post about the setup. Yes you will want to peg your weight with a standard punching rig setup with the danny miller rig I do not believe you will need or want to do that.

Nobody can say it any better than that 8). Here's a thread Marty posted a few months back about punching and covers everything you need

Pegging is a must for punching. As for the punch skirt, it turns you soft plastic into a jig, so I think that is something you gotta find out if you like or not cause i've found time where one works when the other doesn't, gotta let the fish tell you that.

To clarify for those new to punching hooks,
Paycheck Baits Punch Hook and the no longer produced Reaction Innovations BMF hook are EXACTLY the same. Bub Tosh acquired the rights to the hook, and it is still being produced by Gamakatsu.

And yes, it is the best hook ever made :D

I have watched that Chris Raza video so many times now, and yes he does peg his weight. In the video he pegs the weight right next to the hook. But there are many ways of doing it, 6"above the bait, or dont let the weight move at all. Which ever works best.

NOOOOOO you do not need the punch skirt. people that are new to punching need to realize if your going for bigger fish you use the punch skirt. i personally dont like it and dont use it. i catch more without it and ill take big ones with no skirt and more fish with no skirt over the punch skirt which i see very litttle advantages. so bigjosh you do not need a punchskirt. for colors for the delta in double wide beaver you need junebug. definately coonasty. sprayed grass. and cal 420

Hey Danny, I know exactly what you mean, right now i'm just trying to gather as much info about fishing that can. And even though punchin may not be good right now, I am trying to gear up for when it is. I think that your weight will catch me alot of fish!!!!

Why don't you power coat those weights? I would really like to see them in brown or black, then I'd buy.
Maybe I'll buy and try to do it myself.
