Swing-away tongue trailer question

Post by Whitey-O »

I have a small garage and am wondering if when the boat manufacturer lists the length of the boat with the swing-away tongue open and closed, do they consider the motor?

I believe so, but the length can still vary depending on whether you store the boat with the motor up or down in the garage. The best bet would be to call either a boat dealer or contact the company itself. Better safe than sorry, unless you want to extend your garage 8 inches.

as far as i have seen and dealt with, the motor is figured in the over all length listed.

My Ranger tongue swings behind the point of the bow so the length would be the hull plus jackplate/motor off the transom. I do not use mine as my garage is 64 feet deep but the swing away gets used when I drop the trailer at a tournament site. Locking the tongue in the swing out position makes the trailer difficult to steal.

My Champion also swings under the point of the bow. It is always reccommended to stow your boat with the motor down and lowered but with the skag off of the ground. The overall garage measurment you would be looking for is from the prop in the down position to the bow.

The boat Mnfr measures the model length from the bow to the transom.

I added 5' to the back of my garage so that i could back it straight in with the motor down and toungue swung open. One other very important peice of advice: Having a TV and refrigerator in your garage makes its pretty darn nice to work on your gear before a tournament. Cold Bud Lights and the ball game, what more could a guy want?

Amen I am working on that as we speak! I went with a 7.0 cubic freezer though. A little DVD'd Bassmaster playing in the background. Heaven.

Too many variables motor- jackplate-style of 'swing-away' -etc. Find one, measure it before you buy; if this is an impediment. Always consider a slight shifting of the trailer to a side may provide those extra needed inches.
