dropshot on the delta
dropshot on the delta
what is your guys ideal set up for a drop shot rig on the delta? weight size/hook size? rod/line size? worm? any help would be great. thanks.
Re: dropshot on the delta
Just like any other dropshot situation, the fish will tell you what they want. Start with your comfort method and work out color (purple is a good start), line size and hook method. Early spring, not much worm movement. Post spawn/ in to fall more shake and wacky or curly worms. My best fish have been on VERY light line.
Re: dropshot on the delta
Don't go there it doesn't work on the delta !! ha haa LOL well i personally love a small baitcaster with 10-14# florocarbon or p-line flouroclear. I love the 6" worms because that limits the dinker bite to a minimum i feel. I tend to flip it to tules and points in the delta. I usually use MM3 on a size 2/0 offsetshank gammi with a 3/8 to 5/16 sinker depending on the tidal flow. like previously said find what works for you and let the fish tell you what they want and how they want it. i will scale down to a spining reel and 8# if i have to and it works believe me !!! Good Luck !
Re: dropshot on the delta
I like a 7'3" Powell 734 with 12 to 15 pound Fluorocarbon with a 3/0 Owner J Hook and 14 to 3/8 tungsten tear drop weight.
The tungsten helps me feel the bottom better and the J Hook is perfect for 6" fat straight tail worms or creature and craw type baits.
I've caught fish up to 8-13 in the Delta on the rig.
Not the funnest way to fish the Delta, but it does work.

G Loomis DSR 822, Daiwa Steez 2500, Power Pro 10# braid mainline, Seagaur 6# flourocarbon, Owner Mosquito #1 hook, 4 1/2" Roboworm curly tail...
That is my favorite dropshot setup here, so far... 11.07 and 10.97 big fish so far, both on that setup.

Back to the OP, I like 12-15lb fc on a 3 powered baitcast rod. Your choice of straight tail plastic. Don't over look a Zoom trickworm or Senko either.

It's not here yet but my new DS rod is a Dobyns 682c(to replace my Clarus 7' med fast) paired with a citica 100d upgraded with boca orange seals. For line I use 30lb power pro with a 10' top shot of 10lb floro, 1/0 gammy, 1/4-3/8oz weight.

That's what I kept telling myself Nguyen, but they haven't made me up it yet!Long Nguyen wrote:Can't argue with your results tunaman, but boy, I feel like you're flirting with disaster.![]()

I would, however, suggest something more along the lines of 8-10# flourocarbon for fishing the clear areas, and 12 - 15# if you're fishing the 'stuff' (heavy weeds, tules, etc.). Bubba rig would probably be best served with 15-20#.
I like the Owner Mosquito hooks, and use everything from #4 - 2/0 for typical dropshot purposes, but if you need to be weedless the Gamigatsu EWG worm hooks work great. For the Bubba rig, I like the Rebarb hooks - 1/0 - 4/0 depending on the bait.
I use BPS dropshot weights, and have them in everything from 1/16 oz - 5/8 oz - use just enough to keep the bait on the bottom.
Rods and reels - for typical purposes just be sure the rod has a fast tip - this is very subjective for most. Some really like a very light action, while others prefer less. As I said, I prefer the DSR 822 myself - very fast tip, but lots of backbone as well. For the Delta, I'd expect you'd be leaning the same way. Reels just depend on your preference and style selection - if you're using spinning be sure you have a decent spinning reel with plenty of bearings and a good drag... if you're using baitcasters then whatever your personal preference is regarding brands will do just fine.
As far as worms go, don't get stick in the box... you can dropshot anything. Robo's are my personal favorite as far as worms go, but try a brush hog, beaver, bass trix, etc... you'll be pleasantly surprised.
I know the dropshot rig was extremely successful last season here, and no reason it won't continue to be.
Good luck!

Although I see your reasoning circle swimming fish.......you lack the obvise. This is the delta and all rules are out the door day to day season to season. The canal might put a hurtin' on it or Fienstein may try and outlaw it.I know the dropshot rig was extremely successful last season here, and no reason it won't continue to be.

Re: dropshot on the delta
Last week I did okay on 10lb powerpro braid witha 4lb furocarbon leader with a no.4 gamigatsu hook and a 4 in MMIII roboworm....But They were all around 10-12".
I use a Avid st. croix rod 6'9" ml-xf with a sahara spinning reel.
This is the set up I use on clear resevoirs and wouldn't do well in heavy vegetation.
I was fishing under covered boat docks were the reduces light and possible owners keep the weeds down.

Re: dropshot on the delta
Hehehe... the success I was speaking of was that of others during several of the early-season tournaments, and I'd bet those results will repeat again this season. Dropshot works great when things are tough, bass' metabolisms are slower, and finesse is the rule of the day.JustinD wrote:Although I see your reasoning circle swimming fish.......you lack the obvise. Now, the canal or Ms. Feinstein certainly may have an impact, but they'll have to wrench the fairy wand out of my cold, dead hands!

That just don't seem equitable! You having two of something the rest of us got none.
I've dropshotted my butt off on the Delta and I've caught some nice fish, but never a DD.
You must be doing something right!

What structure or cover did those fish come out of?

Yea Tuna how about some GPS coordinates on those spots also ...HAHAHA. I imaging it is one amazing fight with those types of fish on DS. Most of my best fish have come on a jig, and with the heavy rod and line I do not worry to much when I hook into a good one but a 10+ on a DS, VERY NICE.

i was lucky enough to watch tunaman boat one of those dd last spring. made pretty quick work of it with that set up!
pretty much the same set up i own.
the g.loomis dsr 822 is a very nice investment for dropshotting..

Re: dropshot on the delta
The first was out of the tules, the second was around some grass beds (during the spawn).acm95301 wrote:What structure or cover did those fish come out of?
The first was pinned to a clump of tules and couldn't go far, the second buried in the closest grass clump until I dug it out with the net.
Way different than if they had run to open water...

Re: dropshot on the delta
Many have a pretty good idea where the second came from - no GPS coordinates required.texas john wrote:Yea Tuna how about some GPS coordinates on those spots also ...HAHAHA.
