My Engine trims up but slowly sinks back down..

Post by Skunkedagain »

Hey, again...more motor questions for you.

I trim my motor (175 Mariner) up, and it goes up just fine. Problem is, it then slowly goes back down so it will not stay up.

Any ideas on what I can check to see what the problem is?

I had a similar problem with my old Mercury. It turned out the valve on my trim pump had loosened up. Once the motor was up it could not maintain the required pressure. So you might see if your trim pump valve is loose or if your trim pump fluid is low.

Check for fluid around the screw that you add fluid, if none, then you need to do a seal kit on the trim pump and cylinder. good luck.

Okay, so you can get it up, but it won't stay up? :D I'd check for screws. Then pump it a little. Try to get a little trim. Be sure you clean up any fluid you spill tho.

It sounds like a pressure leak. Check to see that the fluid level is full, then check the fittings, and hoses for leaks. Might also be a seal alowing fluid pass in the pump.

Guess I'll have to figure out how to check the fluid level. Man, it seems it never ends. If it's not one thing, it's another. I also have to replace the wood slats on my tailor (not sure if slats are the right word) as I noticed one of them is smashed and broken at the very end.

Saw a guy advertising on here the other day that would do it while you fished. Great idea!!

There is a filler nut on the pump. Getting the fluid in without getting it everywhere is the trick. I used a med size horse hypodermic without the needle.

They're called "Bunks" and they're not that hard to replace. There are kits you can buy or just get some treated 2x6 and some indoor/outdoor carpet, stainless hardwear and go for it. There are guys who explain it on BBC.com Check it out !! OR get someone else to do it for you. BUT it needs to be done soon by the sounds of it or it will damage the bottom of your boat !!

Thanks for all the responses. I've decided to try to replace the bunks myself. The only "hitch" pardon the pun :) is the bolts holding the current bunks on are very rusty, and I doubt I'll be able to unscrew them. We shall see I guess.

Greg, you stole my thunder!

Be sure and use pressure treated lumber for your bunks, and stainless steel lags and washers.

just use a socket and if they dont unscrew, they will bust off and you can just take them off when you remove the bunk.... i did mine and it was really easy.... the hardest part is getting the boat up off the trailer, i was able to do both sides of the trailer at the same time, but it might be easier to just do one side at a time, depending on your boat ?... use pressure treated wood and seal or waterproof, the ends you cut.... also stainless steel bolts washers and nuts, and the staple's for the carpet also...total time for me from start to finish was about 3 to 4 hours...

In regards to replacement of your Bunks. I did mine myself, follow the instructions in regards to treated wood, stainless steel bolts and washers. Take everything with you to the lake. launch and fish. tie the boat up, or like I did let my son fish for about 2 hours.
and replace them, it was not hard at all. just time.
