Where is a good place to start Co-angling?

Post by FinesseKid »

I have a question for all of you super pro type guys:

Could you tell me what tournament circuit or format I should start with for backseating? I am well equipped, I fish club tournies regularly, I have a good fundamental knowledge base. I'm probably about a year away from getting my first bass boat and I want to get in as much competition as possible. I dont know a lot of people in the sport so I would prefer somewhere I could learn, fish against other backseaters, and have a chance to get a check as well.

It seems there are so many different circuits. Which one should a guy like me start with and why?

Perfect. I run a Pro/Am draw format(Top Stick Tour Pro/Ams) that have four events in so cal, and a fishoff in So Cal(diamond valley lake.) It is a shared weight format but you are in a seperate prize pool from the pros. You fish against other co-anglers. While it is not individual weights, you are competing against other co-anglers. The pros that fish my events are some of the best anglers in Souther California. If you go to www.scalenews.com you can get some more info about us. We are building a new site now but should be up soon.

My first event is at Castaic on February 20. These are one day tournaments on local lakes(Castaic, Pyramid, and Diamond Valley) that cut down on travel expenses...

+1 with WON Bass if you're just starting out. Entry is low (comparatively), shared weight and the events on are on the weekend so very little time of work if you work a M-F job.

Shared weight is really great for learning as the Co and Pro are working together as a team. It benefits both the Pro and the Co to be openly honest with all fishing information during the event. With larger events like the FLW it's not shared weight and not working as a team. How well you do during the day has no effect on the Pro. You usually don't find the Pro's opening up as much as to what they are doing or catching them on.

Since you're starting out I would suggest staying with anything shared weight for at least the first year. Then moving up to individual weight if your bank account can accommodate the extra travel/entry fees.

Vince, I hate to split hairs and I am not trying to get into a debate, but the WON Pro-Ams are now friday and saturday events... But I do agree, the Won Pro-Ams are a good deal Thats where I fished as a Co a few years back...and they do have a really cheap entry into a two day event..

Wow... good to know. I thought they were still Sat-Sun events. Looks like I won't be able to fish the Feb Delta event after all. The FLW Series is going to chew up most of my PTO/Sick days this year.

WON Bass Pro/AMs for the south are Havasu, Mohave and Mead.

North is the Delta, Clear Lake and Shasta.

There are three boats that will be given away on the Pro side this season.

You are right, they are Friday and Saturday events.

For full details go to www.WONBass.com

DL,

What's the 2010 schedule for the Top Stick tour pro/am's. The website still has 2009 dates. Are the tournaments held on weekends or Fri/Sat like WonBass?
