Structure scan is an accessory that costs 600.00. Jim Moulton at C and C Marine was running a deal for free installation with purchace.

I have the HD7, and installed the structure scan myself.

I know BPS charged a guy 380.00 to install it.

With regards to the HD unit the lowrance units have a good depth sounder and gps, but the maps(I have the insight version) are dissapointing....I've been looking to upgrade using Navionics, but even then most of what I want I can't get.

The larger screens are a must....Don't buy less than an HD7.

The structure scan can give you Right/left..right only...left only...and down views of structure. In the pages settings you can split screen and match the view with the 2d sounder. you can see trees, bushes, bait, fish, bridge pilings etc.

The downview, identical to the view giving by the 2d sounder is a feature only lowarance has, and its been one of my favorite views.

Bottomline you can find structure elements like humps, creeks, and submerged points ....finding structure...especially deep lake structure will allow you to fish new spots....but you still have to catch them yourself...so its only a tool.

for 380.00 I could take 8 hrs and still make money doing the install myself

need to go with a hds8 min if your going to put it on the console and run the lss1 in my eyes

The HDS units come with the software for the StructureScan and DownScan, but you have to add the LSS-1 Module, which consists of a black box and a StructureScan/Downscan transducer, and an ethernet cable to connect the black box to your HDS unit.

Or you could consider one of the several SI units from Humminbird. They are all one unit/one transducer and you can easily install yourself. Humminbird now has downscan as well, which was merely a FREE software upgrade from Humminbird. I would highly recommend the 997/998 which can be purchased for <$1500, big screen (which you REALLY want with SI) and the very best customer support around.

The Insight USA mapping on the newer HDS units is flawed and Lowrance has been aware of this since September and will have a downloadable repair soon. The mapping should be as good or better then what is on the LCX HD units but they had a problem in the software.

You can purchase the HDS 8 with or without structure scan as a package. You have your choice. Either way the structure scan is around $599.00. Any questions please give me a call.

Cool, it would be nice if the patch will improve the maps.

Get the HD 8. The 5 and 7 only do split screen the 8 and larger will do a double split screen.
