Spinning reel questions...

Post by R.Cook »

Time to buy new spinning reels. What do you guys recommend in the $130 or less range? I have been using Shimano Sahara's since I started bass fishing, and have had decent luck with them, just wanna get some other feedback. Anyone tried the Abu Garcia Soron Stx's? Like em? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I myself have always used Shimano's....mostly the Stradics. I picked up a few of these a few months ago at BPS and all I can say is WOW!!

For the $$$....they are incredible and right now if you trade in an older reel that is working, they will give you an additional $20 off! Pretty damn good reel for the $$$. Just my $.02

I second this post!

I'm not a hard core tournament fisherman, but I went over to these and U.S. Reels and love the large spools on these reels. They handle florocarbon lines much better than other reels! Smooth and great drags!!

Ryan I switched over to the Diawa Tierra for all my spinning stuff at that price point and haven't looked back. You can try out one of mine if you like and see how you like it. I own lots of Shimano just can't get a better reel for the money than the Tierra IMO. Drag is really good!

I hate daiwas, but they do make one of the best spinning reels in my opinion.

Hard to beat what Hippie said, the Dawia Exceler and Theory are priced at 79-89.00 and are great reels with smooth drags.

I also use the 400 Shimano Sahara's series & have worked well.
Have new 3000for drop shot , works good. Other 2 are a ABU Garcia Cardinal (was Christmas present)- just OK. Daiwa is the worst of the 3. Don't remember model, but equivelent to the Sahara. My 2cents worth. Only use spin gear on delta, do not have the patience for backlashes.

I also use Shimano Sahara's almost exclusively, and have kept an eye out for oppertunities to upgrade. Seems the key features that get upgraded are ball bearing counts, improved drags and weight.

In my opinion, ITs hard to get a significant improvement until you really drop some money... a steez is like 4-5 hundred. Also if your fishing alot you could be losing, damaging your stuff and thats some expensive pain.

Another possiblity, is to look at Shimano products not commonly found here... some have wider spools or shallower spools...you can order them online.

Some funny stuff! I have fished with Stella's (450.00 to 600.00) Shimano makes excellent spinning reels. Diawa's are superior in this price range. The low end Shimano's aren't what they used to be. It is all about the drag system in a spinning reel not BB count but if you haven't tried the one specifically that is in the exact price range he mentioned then maybe some of you should. Drag means more than weight, bb count and build materials IMO. Remember he was talking 125.00!
