fishfinder recommendation please

Post by spotfin »

I want to invest in a good fishfinder and can spend up to 650.00. I hear about people who can see their dropshot lure under their boat with good resolution and target separation. I'd like to get a unit like that, which can also spot rockpiles, underwater humps. I like fishing your n.california reserviors, so don't need something which can go beyond 500 feet deep. I'd like gps if doesn't cost alot more.

Can anyone recommend a good fishfinder? I hear so many good things about lowrance.....

By the way, how does one mount a transducer on one's fiberglass transom? Is it a do it yourself kind of thing, or should I hire a shop to install it?

Thanks.

If you can spend a little bit more than 650 then I would recommend a lowrance HDS 5, It has a built in GPS and is a pretty good unit. It shows structure, Bait fish Etc. As far as Mounting the transducer on the transom,Yes you can providing the fishfinder will be located at the helm,You don't really want to have your finder on the bow and your transducer on the transom because of the distance between the two.
Hope this helps

How about this one...... http://www.westernbass.com/forum/ads_item.php?id=15104

Probably the best deal you'll find for a new hds5.

+1
That is a very good price.
If you fish from the bow with a bow mounted trolling motor, you'll want a transducer that mounts on the trolling motor.
If not, then you can mount the transducer on the transom, and it will actually work better than thru the hull.
Either way, have it installed by a professional, unless you've done this kind of thing before.

Rod,
Sorry you didn't get more for the HDS5.
I sell on ebay a lot and imho the reserve price hurt your auction even though you ended up taking it off.
You would have been better to start it off at .99 and let the bidding begin.
Only put a reserve price on your item if you have something people want and there is very few listed (if any) on ebay.
Bidders on ebay aren't very smart and will continue to bid on an item they have been bidding on or saved in their "watch list" even though they can buy an identical item at a lower "buy it now" price or an auction that is ending soon.

You should still clear a couple hundred which isn't bad.

Yeah, it went good and I am not complaining about the outcome..
In regards to the reserve price, I never took it off..
They met/satisfied the reserve..
