Absolutely not. See http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ Diamond Valley Lake.

That's interesting. I was under the impression that they had to be released immediately.

Just to be clear, i am not trying to start drama here. There is plenty of that anyway on this site. I was actually excited that maybe the population of smallmouth was strong enough now that we could weigh them.

Try Kramer's link without the comma at the end: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/ Click on the "Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations BOOKLET" pdf and scroll down to page 16. I'll save you the time - Here's what it says:

(13) Diamond Valley Lake, (Riverside County)
All year.
Largemouth bass 15-inch minimum.
No smallmouth bass shall be possessed

Ron,
When do you think the smallmouth fishery will be healthy enough to allow weighing in tournaments?

Now I know why Jason made the announcement. Also said that the lake is getting ready to really crack down on the speeders. Thanks Ray, started Kyle in derbys at the same age and now look. Gotta keep the kids outside IMHO. Cody loves to drive the boat and he stuck it out all day. Fun time. Rick G.

Q. When do you think the smallmouth fishery will be healthy enough to allow weighing in tournaments?

A...as soon as data collected through out the year shows there is adequate recruitment to justify lifting the release only on SMB. I have not seen adequate recruitment to date so it remains. No one is telling me about catching "rat" SMB only big ones...once those big ones die what will fill the void?

Kiwn
You make a very good point!
any anglers that do catch undersize small mouth Speak Up!

and as most of the anglers know a small mouth bed cannot be mistaken for a largemoutch bed, leave it alone, at least unitl samllies can be leagly weighted.

Just my 2 Cents

Walt
listen to that gut feeling!!!

Kwin let me ask you this then. During shock surveys that you have done on the lake have you seen a smaller fish year class yet or are you only seeing large smallmouth ?

FYI for all of you I do believe this is Kwin from D.F.G. and he is at D.V.L. all the time. It is his project. He is who clips fins at D.V.L. and does the fish surveys at the lake.

In the few times I did shocking with Quinn and Mike, we never did see any smallies.

I've caught a few when I was last on the lake a couple of years ago now, but they're still very few and far between.

Great to see a quality smallie like that in the photo... sure hope they take off and establish a healthy population some time, but it is an uphill battle with the competition from the stripers and largemouth there.

Ray,
I only see 1 or 2 small SMB if I am lucky. The lack of angler caught smaller sized SMB only confirms what I am seeing (or not) in the E-fish surveys.
