Dented Battery Top...What to do?

Post by birdi23nls »

Ok,

here is my newest problem...I bought new trolling motor batteries but they would not fit in my battery tray. I got some sort of pastic piece to lift the battiers above the tray. all worked fine but I needed to strap them down tight to make sure they did not slide around.

I bought a rachet strap and straped them down a little to tight. It dented the top part of the corner in middle of one of the batteries about a 1/4 inch or less.

Do i need to replace the battery or worry about leaking or anything like that?

Just keep an eye on it. If you notice it leeking then you have to replace it. Otherwise its just the plastic bending. Plastic is pretty plyable, so if you loosen the strap it may go back.

What Texas John says is correct and if you want to go down to the auto parts store and pickup the top frames for the batteries,it is a rubber coated frame that sits on top of your batteries and will protect this from happening in the future. Hope this helps

What the others said.. Keep a eye on it while charging, it might have cracked the case and you sure don't want battery acid leaking. I don't think you did any damage to the plates.

I do think ya got the hold down strap tight enough though

where is the case or plates? is there a place i can go online to see the inside parts of a marine battery? If I just dented the plastic on the top....that could make it leak....you would think the top is to protectwhat is inside??? I dont know

When your charging it next let it charge for an hour or so then go look at it, you will see it leaking or hear it bubbling or hissing. If it is doing either of these you broke it, if not you should be ok. I dont know what kinda battery it is but with traditional wet cell batteries when they charge the water/acid inside gets heated thus causing expansion, that is when you will be able to tell if you have done any damage.

I had a hole in one of my batteries the size of a BB and this is what I did I took a piece of plastic about the size of a dime and put it
over the hole then covered that with epoxy being careful to use just enough to cover the plastic and about a sixteenth of an inch more I had a flat and level spot on the battery to work with otherwise I wouldnt have tried this but It worked great, your biggest concern is to not get any epoxy into the battery.

thanks guys....i charged it the other day and did not notice anything leaking....i'm assuming that if there was battery acid leaking out then I would know it.

There is not a hole or gash in the plastic , it is just dented slightly on the corner. I just called Deka and they said it should be fine but I wonder if there is a way to reinforce the spot that i dented? maybe I could put some epoxy over the dent so the strap dosent continue to dig in??? I don't know.

You will be ok.. loosen up the strap just a click.. it doesn't need to be so tight it bends/cracks things.. good and snug is all you need.

Dont add any epoxy, just leave it, if something does happen and you need to return it having stuff all over it might effect your warrenty!
