Gel Coat Polishing

Post by Greg E. »

What is the best stuff to use on the small spiderweb scratches from shoes and poles on the top of the gunwhales. I don't mean large scratches. I just have so many small scratches that it actually dulls the surface. Have not found a wax or polish yet that
takes them out.

On an old car I would say Buffing compound but I don't think that is good for Gel Coat.

Thanks in advance for any ideas

Color sanding and/ or buffing is the only way to remove them. Gel coat is much thicker and harder than automotive paint. Try buffing first, if that does not do it I will be glad to walk you through the color sanding steps. I use the products at this site for maintenance.

For small scuffs, scratches and shoe marks, try these Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. The work great on white boats so a darker boat would be better.

For gel coat polishing, Iv'e used NU FINISH (in orange container) car polish for over 23 years on my boats and every thing else. No rubbing, apply, let dry then buff it off. It's a once a year polish once you get two initial applications on. It really bring out the shine on a gel coat. And last , Affordable too.
