BASSMASTER Magazine

Post by Micropterus salmoides »

I haven't had a subscription to BASSMASTER in several years. While there were some good articles, I found that many articles were redundant over the years. And I am able to get quite a bit of info via the internet. I just received an offer in the mail for a 1 year subscription for $10. Is it still worth it?

I got my subscrition in the last year, and they have a recuurent column called a day on a lake where they stick a tournament guy out on a lake...mystery lake....probably a private one and they get a day to figure it out...and they breakdown every minute.....lets just say that sometimes conditions are tough....and I find it very interesting.

They will also have 1 or 2 technique articles and some tournament stuff. I don't really care to read about famous guys, except for a couple of our local guys like Dobyns, Meyers or the like. All in all a good Mag. My favorite mag is the BAG,then Basswest and then In-Fishermen, and then Bassmasters.

I dont like Field and Stream, or That California one...I forget its name.

BASSMASTER, I believe, puts out 10 issues a year. $10 for 10 issues. How you beat that I don't know, even if they might seem a bit redundant. They've been doing it for what, some 40 years, there bound to cover the same bases more the once in a remarkable run like that. You pretty much have to as your hopefully exposing it to new generations of readers. And almost every technique gets expanded on or modified as years go by. You kind of have to keep finding a new focus on similar topics all the time.

By all means, it's worth the $10. Course, it's only $10 because of the advertisers that make that possible. Trust me, the cost to produce and mail that book cost more then $1.00 per issue.

Mot to mention they have some of the very best writer's and photographers. Louie Stout, Steve Price, Don Wirth, Homer Circle, Brian Sak, Seigo Saito and so on. Superstars at their craft.

All that for less then a buck a month. Yeah, I think it's worth it.

Bassmaster is an icon in this sport, however the articles almost always support their advertisers, elite pros and other interests of B.A.S.S.
This is the reason the magazine has been around since 1967. Articles written about west coast fishing are rare outside of a few west coast touring pro's.
It's worth reading to keep up on the sport in general. If you are looking for regional specific articles then Bassmaster is marginal. Introductary offers like $9.99 for a year is a good deal, don't expect that to be extended for multiple years.
I don't believe Bassmaster offers their life time subscription; I was lucky to be a charter life member since 1967, for signing up to fish the original All American tournaments. 43 years of Bassmaster for free has been a great deal.

I don't get much out of the mag but I do resubscribe every few years just to see how much it's changed and also because of it's roots.

You missed the $4 subscription rate that just expired last month: http://dealnews.com/1-Year-Subscription ... 54079.html

I will not buy BassMaster again till they start supporting the west coast. Just my 2cents.

Big deal--who cares whether they support this coast or that coast.

That's not the reason the majority of us everyday folks out here decide to get the mag or not. They get the mag for its roots, for being one of the forces that elevated a little pastime up a notch in the national spotlight some 40+ years ago.

It may not be all that great a mag but as Oldschool posted above, it's an icon.

BASS is part of bass fishing tradition, plain and simple, and people want a piece of that. They'll join even if the org is currently owned by ESPN, which probably isn't much worse than being owned by some slick, flim flam insurance salesman back in the 60s...
