Yamaha is a solid reliable motor that seems not to have as many mechanical problems, but mercury's use less gas and WAY less oil. I have had and old merc black max and a 2004 opti max, I now have a 2006 yamaha HPDI...so I am basing my statement off my personal experience.

Your best bet would be to talk to a mechanic that works on both...they will be able to give you a real good break down..

good luck,

both are good motors and you"ll get different opinions from the respected owners.
just remember one is made in the usa
Never argue with an idiot; He'll beat you to death with stupidity.
I AM NOT SAYING THERE SHOULD BE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR STUPIDITY,
BUT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TAKE THE SAFETY LABELS OFF OF EVERYTHING
AND LET THE PROBLEM SOLVE ITSELF?"

Couple things to look at here and yes I am biased. The Mercury dealer base is the largest in the country and if you have a problem with a Mercury there is likely a Mercury dealer near you. If you fish WON Bass, FLW or some of the larger events there will be a Mercury service crew there for you.

If you are looking at the Pro XS motors against the HPDI motors the Pro XS is a 3 star CARB motor and can be ran anywhere here in CA and the HPDI is only a 2 star motor. The Pro XS has carbon fiber reeds, solid Billett Motor Mounts, torque master gear case and a large selection of propellers to dial in your specific boat from three and four blade props in many sizes. The Pro XS also runs on Premium Plus Oil and requires you only run 87 octane fuel saving you money each time you fish.

oh and Mercury's are black and they look way cooler than any blue motors..... 8) 8) 8) 8)

if you need any additional help drop me a pm and I would be more than happy to try to point you in the right direction

I'm on my 4th mercury and they have all treated me well. So I guess I'm pretty loyal to the brand BUT I have to say the new Yami SHO sounds great on paper and if the real life tests confirm the reports my next motor will be a Yami.
yeah thats right
