gel coat question

Post by tmulliken »

although I'm quite fussy about taking good care of my boat, there are a few spots on the gel coat on the gunnell that have gone flat. the rest of the boat is fine. I keep it wiped down and covered. can gel coat be rubbed out or buffed? If so, what is the best process? thanks for the help.

Look into the process of wet sanding for fiberglass. Finish it with a good paste wax.

It is not difficult to complete.

If the part in question is metal flake, be extremely careful when doing any sanding. If the sandpaper hits the flake, it will turn it silver looking regardless of the flake color. If your problem area is a solid color, you should be able to wet sand and apply wax to make the area look better, but it will never look as good as the original did. You could also apply new gel coat, this is how a glass shop would approach fixing this problem. This is a fairly complicated procedure and is probably best left to a professional.
