What's the optimal length range, in general? Shorter or longer?

Not sure if you like to fish them with spinning or casting rods? If you like spinning rods, the Fenwick Elite Teck Jerkin Rod is AWESOME!!!!! It is 7'2" Medium Action with a Fast Tip and is rated for 1/8 -3/4 lures and 4-10lb. line. It has great backbone and it also makes a GREAT fluke rod, not that flukes catch fish :D
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

7 foot in length is pretty ideal. As you travel East they do like 6'6" and 6'8" a lot too. Go with a 7 footer. The harder question is glass or graphite :D I prefer graphite but I sell about 50-50 with glass.

Gary,
Which of your 7' graphite casting rods do you recommend for small jerk baits, like the small Pointer or other 5/16 oz. stuff?

I fish the Phenix X-10 for rip baits and it does a great job..

Everyone has there own preference of brand, length, action, etc. Like the above post said, Eastcoast guys tend to use shorter rods, I'm one of them. I use Falcons exclusively. For regular jerks I use a Cara T7 Jerkbait rod (6'5") and for the larger sizes (Pointer 128's and larger) I use a Cara T7 weightless worm rod (6'8"). They both have that "give" in the tips so as to not to rip the hooks from their mouth. I'm short and these 2 lengths allow me to keep the rod tip down but they're short enough to keep out of the water.
Other brands are great I just prefer the Falcons.

7ft for sure. Longer casts, more leverage on the hook set, which gives you better hook penetration. A Powell 704cb or 706cb will cover most of your jerkbait needs.

Each person has their favorite length. What is important is how low your boat sits in the water and how tall you are. If your boat is low, you will need a shorter rod, or you will need to sweep to the side, which is less comfortable for me. If you are not tall (I'm 5'7"), you will need a shorter rod handle so that it doesn't hit your bicep when you jerk the rod. I took a Loomis IMX 843C and took the handle down to 9". It works perfectly for mid-sized jerkbaits and topwater.

I like a 6'6" or 7' casting rod with a medium power and a parabolic action.

I like the Dobyns 705CB but unlike Andrews I like the graphite rod for the feel. I agree with most here that the 7 foot rod has many more benifits over shorter rods. You won't be dissapointed with this rod.

I like my 7' Seeker S-Glass Blank Revolver Rod that Rich Forhan wrapped for me... whippy enough to cast them and get them out there enough back bone to set the hook on a donkey and forgiving when they try to toss it back in your face.

Mark I use the 704 CB. It's ideal for DD 78 and Staycee sized baits. For small baits like the 1/8 oz speed traps I throw the 704 CB Glass. It has a lighter tip and can cast those tiny baits well. Thanks.

I understand the more parabolic rods will handle lighter baits better, but it seems to me the action of the bait is also affected by glass vs graphite? I have always used a more parabolic rod with pointers/staycees and rapalas. I could never seem to find the right tip to help impart the action without over-doing it. I guess I gotta get my hands on a 704cb and see for myself...

Right now, in this economy we need to be buying Strictly American!!! Sorry Gary and Keith I wish I could support you guys!! The only good US made rip rods I know are Lamiglas and Seeker glass rods. I believe Rogue also has some also. If you need one built I will be happy to build one for you. Built your way for about $200.00

If the USA could produce the quality of rods we see coming from Japan and Korea at an affordable price I'm sure many of us would jump at the opportunity.
Unfortunately, because of the cost of doing business in the U.S.(regulations, lawsuits, taxes, etc.) we cannot.
Besides, there is no such thing as a "Strictly American" bass rod!!!

Steve,
Are the blanks you use made here, or overseas? And the components.
I'm not trying to slam you. On the contrary, I've heard nothing but good things about you and your rods.
But almost every rod sold here had some components that are made overseas.
Heck, even our kids are coming from China and Russia.
Seriously, I'm pretty sure Falcon Rods are made in the USA, too, but I don't think all the components are made here.
To be fair to major rod manufacturers, Gary Dobyns included, it's impossible to compete on a large scale without using either imported parts, or totally assembled rods.
It's the economic reality.
Hopefully, they will still make jobs in the sales and distribution end.
Until there are laws that require level playing fields, like requiring imports to be manuf. to the same enviromental and safety standards as domestic products, it will be impossible for most domestic manufacturers of rod blanks and rods in general to compete, pricewise.

"USA made" is one of the reasons I went with Falcon this time...even though I know of the "components reality".
Most all rods on the market are "good" nowadays...just us fisherman doing our research before we lay down the dough.

Maybe you should re-phrase it. "Assembled in the US" Most if not all components are "Made" overseas

Imported doesn't mean bad, it just means the manufacturing and/or assembly jobs are in another country.
I know many U.S. companies who import demand far higher standards for both the products they import, and for the labor force who manufactures them overseas, than the foreign manufacturers were previously providing.
And those who haven't, like WalMart, risk being held up to public scrutiny. The internet has lifted all the rocks that companies used to be able to hine under.
So imported doesn't always mean bad.
But the more we buy domestically, the more money and jobs stay here, in the U.S.A., so it is something to strive for whenever we can.
