What is the best Wacky Rig hook?

Post by smalljaws »

What is the best wacky rig hook for senkos?

I love the Gamakatsu Finesse hooks, but you can't ever "set the hook" when you use them - it has to be a sweep set only.

Several times I've had big smallies whack a falling senko so hard, it is almost impossible not to react - so I end up losing the fish because I set too hard.

Really appreicate hearing what folks consider the best hook.

Thanks a bunch!

I use; LAKE FORK weedless/weighted or unweighted 6/0 hooks (On the Delta). They are made from a Gamakatsu 6/0 shinner hook straight eyed, with a weed guard attached. Very good hook up percentage. Just some minor tweeking of the guard to get it to release easier and it's on. Can be fished in the tough stuff. They are hard to find, but there around.

this is what I use. The hook needs to be wider than the senko.

I've had pretty good luck with these. Owner also makes the same hook without the weed guard.

Those Owner hooks need to be sweep set too, IMO. Like the Gami Finesse hooks, they don't catch/hook up until they catch the corner of the mouth. If you try to set on 'em like a jig etc, you yank it out of the mouth.

For 12lb line and below, I prefer a 1/0 Gamakatsu Split Shot/Dropshot hook.

For 15lb and above line I use a Gamakatsu Live Bait Light Wire hook. Don't let the "Light Wire" fool you...it is a saltwater model and will handle heavy line and heavy bass without bending.
