How To Spool Braided Line
What is the best way to spool braided line onto reels? I want to use this line as a main line on some of my reels with a flouro leader. I've heard that there are some problems with slipping and the line digging in on itself. How can I best avoid these problems?
Thanks
Thanks

OK ... sorry, bad joke. There are two ways. One is to use a mono backing. The other is to use electrical tape on the bottom of the spool before spooling on the line.

electrical tape works like a charm.
Re: How To Spool Braided Line
Always leave the mono on your existing reel, peel off 25 yards or so, uni to uni the braid to your mono left on the reel and wind on the braid, a person would'nt need much more than say 50 yards or so anyway. Then uni to uni your floro leader 6 to 10 ft should be enough. Try it, it works.

Re: How To Spool Braided Line
Mono backing, an Albright know for mono to braid, and spool on the braid with regular pressure, like you would mono or fluoro.
The newer braids are more round, and less likely to dig into themselves. But eventually they get a little worn, and do occasionally dig in. It's just something we all have to deal with.
A line conditioner, like the KVD spray, or even WD40, will help.

Actually... plumbers tape on top of mono.
Electrical tape is a no-no. The adhesive will eventually melt/ooze when it gets hot out. Also, its not good if you use line conditioners either.

Re: How To Spool Braided Line
The width of the reel's spool also plays a big factor in whether the line will dig into itself or not.
I'll spool on some mono so that it lays across the spool of the reel 4-5 times and then use a uni-to-uni knot to attach the braid to the mono backing. I like to put more tension on the braided line than I would with mono or fluoro because once the braid gets wet it shrinks a little bit and always looks like I didn't spool on enough to begin with.
On an Abu Garcia Revo you need to use 50# or higher braid to prevent the line digging in. Shimano Curado 200E you can use 30# because it has a wider spool.

Re: How To Spool Braided Line
Here is a wacky idea... Use the sticky tape provided with the braid!! Crazy idea... but it just mite work.
Altho I am not sure if it works with them all. I know Power Pro includes it.

Re: How To Spool Braided Line
Thanks for the information! Since I've never used braid I have two other questions I hope you can help me with.
When using a flouro leader; do you match it's line diameter with the braid? As an example 16# flouro with 65# braid.
I using an Albright knot which line is the one that is used for the loop?
Thanks

Re: How To Spool Braided Line
I've mainly been using braid to flouro combos with my finesse/spinning rods. On the Delta and Clear Lake I use 20lb braid to 12 lb flouro and on the other local lakes (Berry, Orroville, McClure, etc) I use 10 lb braid to 8 lb flouro. Those combinations seem to work very well for me.
For the Albright knot, you make the loop with the flouro and make the wraps with the braid.
I use heavier braids for topwater or punching, but I don't use a flouro leader for those applications.
