Cardiff 301A drag problem

Post by wg274 »

Just purchased this reel about a month ago. Drag was working great but now I'm having issues. First off- Went to take my rod out of the truck last week and had no drag at all. Drag star was tight and when
turning the crank, spool would not turn at all. This was after sitting in
the truck all day. After 1/2 hour or so the drag started working again
but the reel has never been the same. Drag just does not tighten like it did when new. Would changing the drag washers to carbontex fix the problem here?

Are you using braided line on this reel?

Did you back the spool with some mono or tape? I ask because braided line can slip on the spool if it is not properly backed. It will create the conditions you have described.

Dan,
I think I get it... Going to remove the braid and put 20lb Copoly
on it. Thanks for your help here!

You can use the braided line, you just have to use some backing or tape to prevent the line from slipping on the spool. If you are not comfortable with this, then head to your local tackle shop and they should be able to show you.
