tube/dart head rod

Post by Buckeye »

I sat on my favorite spinning rod and busted it in half  It was a 6' Medium BPS extreme Woo Daves tube/finesse rod. That series is discontinued at BPS.

I liked it because it was stiffer and more sensitive than the other spinning rods I own (mostly St. Croix avid). I could easily set the hook with a quick wrist jerk rather than a typical sweep set.

Any recommendations for a good replacement?

I didn't know if you wanted to stay with a 6 footer, but the new carbonlites are sweet, but the smallest is 6'6" I used those models too (extreme) in the 6'6" size and loved them, still have some. But the new carbonlites are replacing those and my Browning Midas (discontinued also) - I hate when they do that stuff....

It's funny when you get on this site and someone asks about a rod and it comes up Dobyns, Powell, Dobyns, Powell...........I am sure they are awesome, otherwise one of the best anglers in the country wouldn't have his name on it, but the guy is going from a 6' to a 7' (your recomendations)...how are the Dobyns 693? That sounds more like the model he is looking for or similar to what he is using now and is comfortable with (still 8-9 inches more than what he is used to). Please do not read into this post as a bash against the other rods, they are all sweet....just seeing if the 6 foot series would be good too.

Since you are already familiar with St Croix rods, click the link at the top of the page and look at the specs for the Mojo spinning rods. The tube/grub rod is perfect for that application and I also use it for Texas rigged Senkos! The Mojo spinning rods are just awesome rods - lots of backbone, great sensitivity, light and comfortable to fish with, made with quality components and very affordable!

Great rods for the money!

Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I kind of liked the 6 footer because I felt I could feel the soft pressure bites easier and had more control on the hook sets. It felt better than the 6'6 and 6'8 rods i used. I use longer rods for other applications. Not sure if it was the length or the model. I've really never fished with another 6' spinning rod.

I still use a 6' Falcon Lowrider spinning rod that I bought at the Fred Hall Show years ago.
Here's a link to their site:

My buddy swears by the same rod for dart heads. He claims he casts better with it than a longer rod, and feels the lure better.

I won a St. Croix spinning rod 6'0" Avid AVS60MF, one of the most sensitive spinning rods, I have used and is great for tubes and light grubs.

I know several guys with the Mojo rods that have great things to say about them, for under 100.00 they are pretty hard to beat.

My first choice is a Dobyn's 702sf, especially for tubes. My second choice is an Avid St. Croix 6'8 M-XF. And I wouldn't be suprised if the new Dobyn's Savy rods might not be darn close too.

I HIGHLY recommend the BPS Carbonlite 6'9" ML spinning rod that's on sale one for $90.

BEST rod for the money, bar none!
