Queston for all you Delta Rats

Post by Lugnut »

What is the name of the slough / canal that runs East to West from Middle River to Old River (Bascule Bridge)? On the Middle River side you have Bullfrog and on the Old River side you have Cruiser Haven. North side is Bacon Island and on the South side Woodward.

That is Connection Slough, which runs from the Northwest corner of Mildred Island to the South east corner of Quimby Island.

Find yourself a "Fishin Maps - Delta" map, it really is the best reference for navigating the Delta, (that might be a bit of personal bias since I don't have GPS) but if you know how to read a map and utilize USCG Navigational Aids, you pretty much can't get lost.

I am looking for the slough / canal South of Connection. It is in between Connection and the Woodward Canal. I do not see the name listed on the map, and I can't remember the freekin name.

HAHA! After writing the post, I decided to go get my map out of my boat, and much to my surprise this was the first time I've ever been wrong :D

Or maybe I was looking at the map with the wrong decoder ring

Marty Im stayin clear of that one statement you made....LOL,,, Let Tunaman answer that one!!!!!!!!!

Horseshoe> South of Island Club, past Portugues Slough (Or I will say Latino Slough, Political Correction) past Circle Lake, 2 miles up SJ a little slough (Chain Saw sometime needed) is the Horseshoe.

Past the HS about 2 miles is Twin Sloughs, opposite San Jouquin City or the Correction Facility) Past that Hwy 132.

And Dan, 1hr 10minutes from Russo's,,, From Stockton 30 minutes if you know the back way. Its not the gas Im worried about, it the low unit cost!!!!!!

The Old man

By the way Dan, that area in the 50-60's was world class Quail Hunting.

Hell Rich- So was Randy Way off of Minnosota in Brentwood in the '70's thru the Gregersons' orchards, the Revels', Pringles, Linseys, Gurskys', Bailys' Orchards as well as the other Almond, Walnut, Apricot, Cherry orchards ~~ with the loan Peach orchard across Marsh Creek and North of the RR Tracks ....and was even a Grape (green) vinyard on Minnesota across the old walnut husker.

The Barley fields that turned in to Cabbage and Tomatoes more so than the Barley as evolved with the near by broom factory in the cinderblock building ..... and Sand Creek itself for Pheasants untold of !

There was a horse shoe'er that did it on the side that was a Sheriff -- once he found out all those Phesants in the creek behind us that my pop's hired thru word of mouth out of the mill -- That dude brought all his "homies" to hunt public land ..... and wiped that homestad out in a single season !

J.Rios prolly knows more names South of me where I resided growing up and going through them daily. .......But the saddest part now is that it is all gone and nothing but housing tracts and asphalt now. :(

Since I was on a history lesson in that last post ........

The Island house at the end of RailRoad/Twin Sl. Myself and other teens helped demolish that old duck club - and I helped rebuild it to the final sod laying with the Trustons who were our neighbors in DBay after my parents sold my roots out from under my feet while I was away at 4-H camp.

Talking with my pops the last time I had him down for Striper fishing last week. Apparently the Trustons traded that island for a houseboat of somesort in Cruiser Haven. ( I hope it is not the one on the floating barge !! ) I hope to still locate them from Zoomer(black/gray lab) barking at me when I go thru there next time.

Speaking of that area, it reminds me of a little oxbow off the San Joaquin I used to fish as a teenager out my jonboat in the early 1980s. Knew some of the farmers and reclamation people out that way so we had access through various locked gates and levees--the area I'm talking about was off Hays or DePue Road where Perrin or McMullin dead ended. I think one of the landowners was Rocky Filippini and the slough may have sometimes been referred to as "Filippini Slough." It may have also been called "Mexican Slough" in the Manteca Bulletin's fishing reports.

What other name(s) was that area known by?

That oxbow is probably silted in by now and much of the area could have been turned into housing tracts--or is it still ag land?
