Clear Lake Smallmouths

Post by NoCAL »

This past Saturday in our club tournament my partner and I caught 2 smallmouth bass. One was 15.5" and ended up getting culled. The other was 17.5" and we brought it in for the weigh-in. Everyone that saw it agreed it was a beautiful 3+ lb smallie. I've caught them before but not of this size. Anybody else caught any nice smallies at Clear Lake?

I had not caught one there until 2001 on a guide trip. I caught a 3 lb 11 oz smallie with one that size following her to the boat. Within the hour, one of the clients caught a 3-1 and 3-3! Three in one hour!!! About 4 years I caught my second one on a Chatterbait (my first Chatterbait-type fish) about 2 3/4 lbs. The largest I have heard of was a 5 lb 7 oz smallie - officially weighed in during a tournament.

I've caught two Smallies in Clear Lake last June I caught a 3.5 plus on a rocky shelf in the Highlands Arm. It was a drop shot fish and the bite was like a rubber band stretched very different, then the fish went balistic when hooked I had a hard time landing that fish with no net and 8#test and no one in the boat for photos I took a few as best as I could and that fish will forever be in my memories.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

I make the trek from SoCal and I fish Clear Lake the third week of August every year. I always seem to catch one or two 15-17 inch smallmouths from the docks around Monitor Island.
