Dobyns Extreme 744 Full Grip or Split Grip?
I just order a Dobyns Rod 744 Extreme Split Grip. There must have been some sort of miscommunication or mistake because they sent me the 744 with the full grip. I called the company this morning but they are closed for the weekend. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure it will not be a problem for them to send me the split grip rod.
However, I thought I would consult the experts on a few forums before I send the rod back. Do you guys have a preference or have you fished both rods? Should I keep the full handle or get the split grip?

Re: Dobyns Extreme 744 Full Grip or Split Grip?
I have both split grip and full grip rods . Actually i like the full grip on the baitcasting rods , spinning rods i like the split grip . When i grab the lower part of the handle on a baitcaster to make a long cast i dont like the way the split grip feels . Try it out and if it feels good keep it and use it .

Re: Dobyns Extreme 744 Full Grip or Split Grip?
I have the 744c with a full grip, and I have other dobyns rods like the 702 with split grip.
I prefer the feel and grip of a full handle over the spilt grip. There may be merit to the idea that you will feel more out of direct contact with the blank, but overall I prefer the full handle.
This maybe a preference thing, I have never droped my split grip rods, but I do know I rarely prefer to grip the blank.

The full cork grip may seem to balance a longer rod a little better with the little bit of added weight of the cork in the butt section.
I like the full cork on casting rods..... just personal preference.
You won`t be disappointed either way with a Dobyns rod.

I have the 744DX full and I think it is one of the best rods I have ever owned. I do have the split-grips but only in the spinning rods. I just prefer full grips in all my casting rods. I have said this many times but the 744DX is by far the best spinner bait and buzz bait rod I have ever had. I also used this rod as my steelhead rod just for kicks. And I caught some steelies up to 15lbs this past season.

Yep, I wont buy some Dobyns rods because of the non split grip.ASD wrote:I am a split grip guy! The only rods I have with full grips are My Dobyns flipin stick and my Quantim (sp?) swimbait rod

I have been a full grip guy forever. It is a matter of what you like and are use to.

I've tried both and I like the 744 full grip the best. It has a really solid feel to it.

Split or full handle I believe is a comfort thing for the most part. I personally like a full handle when I use the rod for casting baits. I also like a full handle in some cases to increase butt weight and help balance out a rod and reel setup. I do find a split grip comfortable and a little lighter when pitching baits.
I would encourage you to call Richard or Gary next week at the shop and I am SURE either will make sure you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Thanks to everyone. I decided to keep the rod and went out to Melones yesterday. Awsome rod, very light and extremely sensitive.

Re: Dobyns Extreme 744 Full Grip or Split Grip?
Cool question!
Pretty much all the rods I built for myself I built with split grips; I liked the look and the idea of less weight.
However, just recently I figured out how to turn my own custom EVA grips, and needless to say, the look bad@$$! So I have begun the task of regripping most of my split grip rods. I've come to realize the weight issue is totally mental, and I sure as hell can't notice the difference between having 0.96 oz of foam with a split grip, and 1.07 oz of foam with a full grip
All in all, it comes down to what looks cool, as the type of grip doesn't change the rod in any appreciable way.

Re: Dobyns Extreme 744 Full Grip or Split Grip?
Hi Jared. Great question really. It boils down mostly to personal preferance. I personally always choose a full grip if available in the line. The splits look a little cooler and are more popular by about a 60/40 margin. My complaints on splits. They are a tad harder to balance, the "knob" gets stuck in jacket pockets, and the dang things cost several dollars more to make in trim pieces and finish work.
My really popular models I make both ways. The DX 744C is one of those. If you want a split handle, I'll swap you and keep the 744 full handle as one of my personal rods. I love that rod. Your chioce bud. Also, due to MANY requests there will be a DX 745C in the future. About 3 months. Thanks for the purchase and question.
