help for the girl question ...without any dumb blonde jokes?
Okay, I was reading in the complainer forum that you can come on here and ask a question and really get help... I have before and so I am gonna try again...
i know this is the kind of thing that would only happen to a girl but need answer anyway
blast off at tournament, director says official time is satelite/cellphone...kewl dont think anymore about it....
fishin for a while, couple a fish, look over at the HDS screen says 8:30am ...kewl plenty of time...
fishin all day, ready to weigh,HDS says 3:25pm of course cut it to the last 20 min to blaze back by 3:45 weigh in ....
whew! made it, wheres the check in guy? ghost town, where is everybody? wind was bad, could they have called the tournament in? no...nobody does that? I will check my cell phone and see if the tournament director called it due to bad weather...
OMG, cell phone says 4:45p...look at HDS, it says 3:45pm -
really????... don't these automatically change at daylight savings time? My cell phone does?
whats up? do I have to push a button, set a setting, what? if anybody knows I would appreciate some help... I have asked two of the boys that were no help cuz they said not familiar with hds.
oh yAH, has it happened to anybody else?

BSFG,
I have the HDS 7, my manual I just looked at doesn't have any adjustments for daylight savings time. Looks like you'll have to manually adjust when the clocks change. Sorry you missed the weigh in. Perhaps someone with better knowledge of the manual or unit can chime in if my answer is incorrect
Did you have a descent bag?

IF you are actually serious, do not rely on your electronics for that kind of information. USE A WATCH.
This issue has reared its head at Havasu many times from the novice to the seasoned fishermen (women). AZ is one hour ahead during daylight savings time (if that is fall to spring). You rely on that device or cell phone you could be off by an hour and you're late for weigh-in.

I am totally serious, it really happened
whats a watch? a watch...thats so 2001.
but really the TD didn't even say an official time...he said "the official time is satelite/celphone time" and that was it.
I didnt think people have watches too much, nowadays????
hmmm, do real fishermen really rely on their watch? not their electronics?
I thought satellite time was universal like world atomic time? no?

Re: help for the girl question ...without any dumb blonde jo
When BASS came out in 05 or so, Edwin Evers missed his weigh in by 1 hour as he was relying on his GPS time. Since our gov changed the Daylight Savings Time date, some GPS does not update until the older DST date is reached. I see this on my old X15 every year, including this year. Not sure about the new HDS units. That is why I always have 1 watch, GPS and Cell phone to coordinate the times.
Re: help for the girl question ...without any dumb blonde jo
It has happened to a couple guys in our club over the years. It happened to me pre-fishing up at Melones. Had to go get the kids......oops I guess that's what after school care is for.
I had to manually change the time on my unit.

Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

BSFG,
To answer your question - NO, GPS and Satellites do not use Atomic clock timing. They are sofware driven; just like your pc.
This may be your problem.
All GPS, GSM, & Satellite systems are "pre-programmed" via software to change; just like your pc.
BUT - in several of the last few years, we have changed the US time "different" than planned, or not to schedule. So, phone and Satellite devices were off schedule. Your cell phone company may have gone and "updated" its programming for this change on its GSM system, but the generic Satellite Positioning System that all fish finders use likely did not.
Just a guess.......
Yes, real fisherman still use a watch to keep track of time. Just like i still carry a map in my boat, even though i know the Delta like the back of my hand and i have GPS too.

Yes it happens to all of us guys to! The best thing to do is go buy two $1.99 stick on clocks and put 1 up front and 1 on the dash. set the time and set the alarm so that you have time to make the run back + 10 min's if you get close to the off limit area and still have 10 min's fish some more

Re: help for the girl question ...without any dumb blonde jo
Prepare, prepare, prepare that is all I can say. Lots of ideas about stick on clocks etc.. but I am not trusting of a 1.99 clock to be accurate. Here is what I do, it may be overkill but this is how I do it every tournament, everytime and I fish alot....your day starts out with your alarm clock, plug in one with two alarms set, and cell phone alarm as well. When I get to the ramp and put my HDS8 on, I make sure I check it vs. my cell phone. I also pay close attention as the TD or Tournament Official announces official tme and make sure both my GPS units have the correct time as well as my cell. No need to go back into the old school for you tech savy people, just prepare ahead of time and make sure you are all good on the time. I know the three alarms in the mourning are overkill, I usually wake up before they go off anyway but I sleep a little better knowing my bases are covered.

you need to set the clock manually for the specific time zone. and they do not update for daylight savings time adjustment due to several states having different adjustments

Gee, thanks Backseat Girl. I used to have 2 recurring nightmares that really drove me nuts over the years.
One was tornado related (not sure why.... I've never been in one. Maybe I was traumatized by the flying monkey's and the wicked witch on the bike in the Wizard of Oz movie??)
The other was rolling in to a weigh in with a huge sack o' bass only to be told I was 1 minute late and DQ'd. I haven't had that nightmare in years...but now that you've mentioned it, I'm sure I'll have to deal with it again.
Well...I guess it's better than having a dream about flying out of the boat at high speeds....

Backseatfishergirl,
You said your cellphone had the correct time.
I don't know about your cellphone, but the alarms on mine, and a friend's, work even if the cellphone is turned off, or without signal.
I set my phone alarm for a safe time before weighin, and, when it goes off, I know to check the time, and where I am, and act accordingly so I won't be late.

No,
Atomic Time surely exists, but it is only 1 time, sort of like GMT time, set as a neutral standard that all other time can then be calculated from. Atomic Time never changes, nor adjusts; its a constant.
Your HDS electronics gets that Atomic Time information from the satellites, and then using your location, re-calculates for your specific location adn timezone. The software then decides when, if ever, to switch to Daylight Savings Time for your location too.
A lot of GPS devices dont attempt to adjust for daylight savings, because there are just so many variables. they leave that part up to the user to manually adjust. Usually they just do a yes/no check box. if you check yes, they take 1 additional hour away from the standard time set,; if you say no, then you get the standard time for your timezone.
Hope that helps.

Just part of the learning curve. I've been DQ'd twice because I assumed that I had reset my watch.......I did'nt.
Came in an hour late both times. I can take it, but it sucks for the backseater that relies on the boater. Oh, and backseaters! Use your own watch and warn the boater please.

This happened to me at a club event at clear lake. I was the only angler in the club who did not have a co-angler.
When I was about a half a mile away and headed in for what I thought was the weigh-in I passed a fellow club member headed the other way and gave a casual wave, he was one of several boats dispatched to go find me. He was annoyed at my casual attitude.
Needless to say they were concerned at first, then annoyed, then the jabs started to fly
To this day I am always asked if I know the time.

I have gone into my electronics in the menu\time\ auto adjust for daylight savings and disabled the feature. Now its up to me to turn the clock ahead.
On another note, I would request that the TD always announce official time as cell phones electronics etc.... can be overridden and everyone should have the opportunity to adjust the watch accordingly. If the TD would have given an official time you would have seen that your clock is off, perhaps.
But this is not a girl thing, this is an educational deal.

Backseatfishergirl,
If they dont give an official time I always ask before blast off.
I do rely on my Lowrance but use a clock or cell as a backup.
I dont remember having to switch my Lowrance to DST this year,...
Ont thing about fishing the smaller club and team tournaments is they will usually slip up or forget to tell us everything, so make sure you ask if you have any questions.
Have fun,
Steve,

I bought a cheap Timex Ironman at Wal-Mart for this reason. I don't like to wear watches, but I'll be damned if it's still on my arm now! I set it one minute ahead of time, and it's still that far ahead 5 months later.

The first watch I bought for myself, in the late '60s, was a Timex electric.snapitoff2002 wrote:I bought a cheap Timex Ironman at Wal-Mart for this reason. I was digging footings on a hillside job, and took the watch off because the metal band was slipping around from my sweat.
I set it on a concrete step next to where we were working, and then we proceeded to cover it with the dirt we were excavating.
When we finally backfilled after we'd poured the retaing walls and stairs, three months later, I uncovered the watch and it was still keeping perfect time.
It died eventually, but I still have it in a drawer somewhere.
John Cameron Swazey did a commercial for Timex back then.

Personally, I think gps / cell time is the best way. If you go by the TDs watch, everyone needs to adjust their thinking. GPS and phone time are universal, and how many boats out there fishing tournaments don't have a gps or one of the fisherman doesn't have a cell phone. Why should 90 boats in a 100 boat tournament who all have the same time have to adjust. If the TD doesn't have a cell or gps, he should set his watch from someone that does.
I almost got caught by the daylight savings thing once, but knowing I had launched at about 6 a.m. and waiting for the blast off I noticed my gps said 5:30 it was an easy fix. Sometimes you just need to pay attention.

How did you show up on time? Anytime you fly and are on a time zone border state i must check the time fifty times. I would never rely on the electronic item automatically switching for me-i've seen it not work more than once.
Re: help for the girl question ...without any dumb blonde jo
Don't feel bad, my buddy and I did it once and I know one of the better sticks in our state did it two years ago. It happens but you should only feel really bad if it happens again:)
