Trokar Punch Hooks-Review/opinion

Post by flipit »

So I had a few bucks left on a gift certificate and decided Id try some of these "sharpest hooks". As mentioned I bought the punch hooks in a 3 and 5 ought. The first thing I noticed was that the hooks are nowhere near the size of the Paycheck Baits Punch hooks of the same size. I have no machines to tell me if its sharper then others or not, but both brands are plenty sharp and strong.

My two complaints on the Trokar is quality of the product, and high cost.(I consider the keeper a quality issue) If the hook worked as it should I guess I wouldnt mind the cost. However the 2 days I spent punchin with the Trokar I had to repeatedly reset the keeper and the bait. The darn thing slides down the hook almost every time I pull my bait out. So since these are supposed to be ready to fish out of the package, and cost $3 more, I will be sticking with the Paycheck Baits hooks instead.
Fishing should be fun.

Thanks for the feedback flipit. They sure do charge a premium for the hook. With reviews like yours, I'll stick to what's already proven.....the BMF and Paycheck hook.

I agree they are sharp, but I dont believe they are any shaper then the others mentioned. For $10 for 4 hooks the keeper is supposed to be ready to go. If I gotta flick a bic I may as well save the $3-4 and use the others.

Im not bashing the product, just dont see it as any better and it is over priced for the product.

I think Bub uses what called "water tight shrink tube". It comes with hot glue coated inside, same stuff glue sticks are made of. When heated, it melts and the tube shrinks, glueing onto the hook. I think Trokar should invest in the same. You can buy it at any electrical supply store and make any hook the same.

I picked up several of the Trokar hooks. Like the way they were already set up with the barb. Had read many good things about them and such. What I found out was the Punching hooks were not welded and my snell knot would always slide into the ring. A pro suggested that I could solder each one to prevent this.
Not sure for the price I will be buying any more.
They do seem strong though.

Don't waste your time or money with anything besides the BMF/Punch Hooks, they are the original incarnation, but unlike most things on this earth, they got it right the first time!!

They are the original straight shank wide gap hook for flipping? Sorry but I don't think so. Many have been using shrink tubing for years. Heck Robo has been making here hooks to keep worms on for well over 10-12 years.

I have been using the Trokar flipping hooks for a while now. I have had no problems with the keepers!
when they first came out they had a issue with the points rolling over. They said they changed it and its not a problem. Out of 6 days on the delta and 4 pre practice days before that I had one hook point roll over and that was after I hooked a few docks!

I like the hooks and will continue buying them. my .02
