The good ol days are gone. But back in the day we had clubs that started this hole mess. You had to work hard to get to the top. You had to fish with guys from all walks of life like them or not. Then if you were good enough. You could try, The western bass team or draw events or the redman when they came out west. And if you were one of best in the west guys, and there were vary few. You could could try bass. We had no PC OR INTERNET To bash someone. It had to be done face to face. Times have changed. Now you can charge 70k and have the best boat, rods, reels, and what ever else you want to go with it, say whatever you want on this website, and go fish almost any TX you want. But it won't put bass in the boat. Don't ask what works here or there. Take your boat out and try something new. You never know you might find something that works. Everyone knows we all lie.

JW You better back me up or its bash time :)

This site wouldn't suck if......
If it wasn't peoples main goal to demean or bash just to ruin the site experience.
If people knew the difference between Bashing and voicing an honest opinion.
If politics didn't run this board. Meaning someone could make an honest opinion about something (even a sponsor or WB staff ect.... if it was true) and not get deleted or banned.
If sTony preached what he typed.(like he said he does ..... he doesn't) He has said some things but can't back it up when the opportunity came knocking "7 ways from Sunday"
If you don't know something for sure don't say it.
If this site didn't seem like it was ALL about making money from sponsors........
If Mendez didn't own Western Bass (He owns everything already!!)
If I don't get banned for typing this .....haha

Mike, you're a Mod from another website, one that was billed as the anti-westernbass.com site from it's origin. Correct? For clarification and qualification, I wanted that out there for those that may not know already.

It's all pretty simple.
Constructive criticism is best delivered one on one, not in front of the whole community. That just makes people defensive, instead of being able to actually hear what you want to say.
Otherwise.....
If you don't like the way a tournament is run, don't fish it.
If you don't like the way a website is run, don't visit it.
Attitude plus effort equal success

Yes I am a moderator for another website. And Yes we try and run things a little different over there. I still find myself looking on here and occasionally posting. But Moderator for another site or not that doesn't change what I know for fact. and that forms my opinions. I don't lie. I WILL back up what I type or leave on a voice message because I am a Man. A Man in my book is one who tries to live his life feeling good about who he is as a person and how he treats other people. And if you make a mistake you own up to it and move on. All the while trying to have FUN in this thing we call life. I think that's what type of Web Site CalBassin.com is. If that's opposite of Westernbass, then maybe we are the anti-westernbass.

Yo Gary. Here's the math on this topic

Loose moderation = lots of controversy = more clicks = more affiliate ad revenue and banner ad sales = money

Taking out the middle we come up with

Loose moderation = money

Every time there's some lame post about tournament paybacks that draws 5,000 views, that's money in the bank. Every time people pound their chests about how they would shoot pirates on El Salto, it's money in the bank. This post is money in the bank. All the controversy and complaining is money in the bank. You're saying you want the site to be better, but that would take money out of the bank. So I wish you luck 8)

I really like how you put it!

I don't know why, but there is always someone complaining on here and its moderated a lot versus other forums, where there is less complaining and less moderating. So coming from a kid...lets all grow up and stop complaining, like the liberal hippies that I have to deal with in Santa Cruz.

Bullet point presentation of this thread

Threads should be constructive

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

And that my friends is how I survive the Forum portion of WesternBass. Non constructive posts and foolish or rash statements are simply edited right here on my side of the monitor. Want to set yourself on fire...I'll watch the glow from a safe distance. If I can help an angler with specifics I send them a P.M.. So my feeble attempts can either be rejected or embraced at the point of origin and not subjected to any other scrutiny or other unsolicited remarks whereby the officials whistle blows and the dog pile begins and kills off an earnest question. I still delete more than gets posted... with age I've learned a few things...The better to burn out than it is to rust mentality is a testament to the karma and legacies that the negative naysayers will always have And it is comforting to know that anchor they cling to will keep them from moving forward...

So ya have that going for ya Gary...

It goes in waves Drew. I personally don't feel it's at it's worse or getting worse, but I don't read every single post these days either. I've learned to weed out the posts from their titles, even by the originating poster, as to which are worthy of my time here. Then again, I fish more than most these days and am not in here as often either.

GARY MY LITTLE 2 CENTS ARE why even worry about it. With what you have accomplished in our community people can only be either by your side , envious or jealous. So your opinion greatly matters. Heck bustin on others guys is part of being one of the guys. Orgs will always be critiqued, in essence their like the government dishing out the good(s) and the bad. All part of the human process. The problem with a message board is that its just digitized text and pictures no emotion like the spoken word or a simple smile!!Well I've said enough over and out

Dont know that its worse. I do feel like I got more out of it 10 years ago, but maybe its just seeing the same stuff again. So for some it may be good, others maybe its just info already known.

On the other hand, I was gone for a few years. When I came back I got the feeling of hostility at times. Dont remember it being like that before, but maybe I was used to it. I can say I miss alot of those old posters from back then. I never see those folks posting anymore.

How would you know one way of another? You joined the forum what, ten days ago, made a bunch of posts like this and, of course, you're completely anonymous. Almost all of your posts have been to this thread.

OR

Maybe you came over from another website just to stir it up.

Either way, that is what's screwed up about the internet and part of what damages forums like this.

It's all the blindsides, all the disparaging one-liners. It's all those that only want to post when they're ready to pounce on someone that supposedly did them wrong some time in the past. It's those that have basically said, "Screw the forum policies, I'm going to do what ever I want." And then when confronted with the rules, like mods generally do, they pitch a fit, call all their forum buddies and gang up on the mod. It's because of all of those that have vigorously supported the abuses to the forum.

Those that want to create an illusion that "everyone's been banned" off of the site.

That's what leads to "loose moderation". It happens when mods get shy about enforcing policy because of the instant backlash it creates. Some people say we haven't moderated enough and others say we've either moderated too much or inconsistently. There isn't a manual for this stuff. No course of study. Expectations vary greatly amongst all the forum users as to what they'd prefer we do. And for us its always been about just having a fun, hopefully entertaining and informative forum. We'd prefer not to moderate at all. That would certainly be the ideal scenario.

Nearly the entire front page of this forum was filled yesterday with posts. Dozens of them. Threads on tournaments, on technique, people asking for info or questions. Yet it was this thread that got over 70% of the forum traffic. The forum is as informative as it ever was. But how many of you actually read and/or responded to those questions in other posts? Have you done a count lately to see just how many people came in and asked questions that no one ever responded to?

Folks can complain but in the end it is a public forum. It's the public that controls the mood of this forum and the content, not the mods. It's loose cannons all over the internet that have made it a completely different scene then it was a dozen years ago.

Here's an honest question... When was the last time you posted a report after a fishing trip? Report pages all over the internet aren't what they used to be either. Folks don't open up as much anymore, for a wide variety of reasons. Some have been intimidated into not posting in forums and filing fishing reports. Others have been hit with racial slurs in PM's and more. It's sickening at times to hear stories of why people don't post.

Yeah, I miss the days when guys like Pat Dilling, Dean Sault, Dave Doubledee, Bob Wager, Mark Hoffeditz, Vic Hershberger, Mick Kitchen, Jim Wilson, Lawrence Lee, Bob and Jenny, Bob Figueria, Vince Hurtado, Alton Forthe, Todd Crockett, Bob Santora, Angler Valdez and many others used to hang out in the forum and help people catch more bass and just have some fun. Some don't fish any more. Some have passed on. Some had run-ins with people online and decided it wasn't worth it. Some are just doing other things with their lives and free time. As many reasons as there are people. Some left long ago, others much more recent. Some folks have expectations that we'd moderate this forum 'back to the good ol' days.' It's just not possible.

We stopped doing Rally's because people didn't come anymore. It's sad for those that remember the hey day of the Rally. Heck we had couples propose at rallies, friendships bonded there and so on. But bit by bit, life just changed.

My father would like for it to be the fifties again, but that ain't happening either.

Life changes. No way the forum wasn't going to as well. It's up to those that use it to make it whatever it will be now and down the road. I have fond memories of the last fifteen or so years of interacting with folks on this website and in this forum. Of all the people I've meet on the water, at shows or at tournaments. And I'll look forward to hopefully many, many more years of it as well. Sure things are different. There's no way it could be anything other. Better or worse I'm not sure, different I'm very sure.

I too miss those days Tony. Getting together for the first 3 Nutcase events, bbq's, friendships, that's what it was about. The information sharing was plentiful and welcome to guys like myself.

Then the site started to get popular and with the popularity came critics and synics. At first, I believe it was a bunch of kids that came on here just to stir things up for kicks. You know, kids being kids. Now, I think it's festered into some people coming on here with agendas and just wanting to argue. A few bad apples...

This site has lost it's focus for the most part and that's why I choose mainly just to window shop. I know what some will say, "If you don't like the post, don't read it". But, that's just it, I have to read some of it to not like it and at that point, it's to late, Iv'e already got a bad taste in my mouth. I for one don't like sifting through all the negative posts to find a positve one.

That's what sucks about this site!

Some people don't know that we know each other on A personal side and like to just mess with each other just like we do at the docks or on the water. SOME people do just like to stir the pot and we know who they are. There is still a lot of great info on this web site and A lot of info goes through PM'S intead of open forums because A lot of the guys fish tournaments and don't want to give out info to everyone. sTony,

Here's a bit of constructive criticism: relax and play by your own rules.

Now all of the sudden, I'm being attacked simply because I've joined this site roughly ten days ago? That violates rule #6: No personal attacks – if you disagree with someone, state your case intelligently and back it up with facts. We will not tolerate personal attacks". Thank you for the warm welcome.

Then there is Rule # 5: "We promote a friendly atmosphere for anglers to exchange ideas. Differences of opinions are welcome and are an important part of this format. We do not, however, tolerate those that try to start an argument with every post. If you are looking to agitate people, simply to get a response, or if you are a troller, this is not the place for you".

I believe all of my posts to this threads, (and there have been others unrelated to this post since I've joined), have been in line with the topic. People have been putting their little emoticons here and there, made their small pokes and jabs at other members, I make a comment, followed by a "little green man" (smiling no less), and then get pounced on by the owner? Heck, I even posted some cool links to add a little comedic punch. Guess they weren't that funny. My bad.

That's what I was referring to when I said earlier in this post that there is no consistency on how members are publicly reprimanded.

The mere fact that people like Gary Dobyns who have "big names" made this comment: "Robert F your post was as i figured it would be. You did not disappoint", and was not replied to by any mod, further exemplifies my point regarding consistency.

BTW, you forgot to add Randy Pringle's name to the long list of people who don't post here for the reasons mentioned.

Have you looked in the mirror lately Tony? If there is a controversial thread on this forum you are almost always in the middle of it voicing your opinion and breaking some of your own rules along the way.

This is not a personal attack by any means, just an observation:

When the owner/manager or mods engage in opinion, they open themselves up for debate/criticism like any other member and they should be ready to except the consequences like the rest of us.
When members disagree with you in a thread they are somehow breaking forum rules or we get the "if you have a problem, email us" line, but somehow it's ok for you to vent on the public forum.
Tony, cmon, if you want respect and consistency you need to lead by example.

The way I see it, the only difference between you and any other member on this forum is that you have the ability to delete, ban and enforce!

Wow this sure has degenerated into a "if you don't like it I am going to take my bat and ball and go home" discussion. I have the up most respect for Mr. Dobyns, Mr. Stoltz, Mr. Cuccia, and Mr. Brown and think their points and concerns and very valid. I also have the utmost respect for all others who frequent this forum to exchange ideas and concerns about fishing and just getting through this thing we call life. I also remember the hay days of this forum and when it was called NCBF.com and yes I still call it that today (call me old school at 29), I even used to access it with dial-up. Heck I even remember guys like stickbait, swimbait, rdog, bassk9, Mr. Bucholz, Andy Ginnani, HippieMark, 5bags, and even the "dog pound" and Coochifications. Heck, which is even how I got my name. These gentlemen have given out a wealth of knowledge and have probably forgotten more then I could have ever possibly learned in the 10+ years I have been a "nutcase" here on NCBF.com. 8)

I guess what I am saying is that we are all entitled to our opinions and thoughts, but let’s not forget why this website was created in the first place. It was created to give people like us a voice and a place to exchange ideas and information about how to chase after little green fish. The more we continue to bash one another and run each other down, the more that will deter anyone new from joining our little corner of the internet.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. -- Mark Twain (1835-1910)

Ultimately what I am saying is: mean people suck!

Those that want to create an illusion that "everyone's been banned" off of the site.

No problem Tom.

It's probably because they got banned.

Steve, when did you get a new name? why the new one?

Just want to point out that I do not have any idea who "sweetbass" is but Garys' comment wasn't lost on me. I commented back and certainly expected that more would see the irony in this whole thread by Mr. Dobyns' comment. I have NEVER had personal contact with Mr. Dobyns for him to draw any conclusion as to how I may be expected to "disappoint".

The amazing thing is others, like Gary, jump on this thread to say WB is unfair and the only site with this issue. Not true. Critics in this thread have made it their personal agenda to bang individuals incessantly on other sites. WB may tolerate a hit or two but a career of sideswipes under a pen name is not tolerated.

The best part of this whole thread is how many people can come in here and make negative comments about another person or topic and feel they are any different. Is there a difference in that action from the others they are complaining about?

I'm sure there are a lot of people on here reading posts of people that appear to be bashing each other, but are merely just poking fun at a friend. As far as the bashing orgs, companies, etc. I myself don't do that. I will post that I won't fish an org, or use a product cause of the negative feed back I read on here. Some people take the net way to seriously!
