Do you mean what caliber rifle or location?

243 to 4570
ar15 with steel jacket or anything 6 mm on up

Long rang 223 with a scope will work but a hog has a tough shoulder.

Short to medium rang a 30/30 would be excellent.

Rod,
I think a great pig rifle is a .30/.30 which is my personal choice mainly due to the conditions I hunt and leverevolution ammo, but a .270, .30-06, .308, perhaps even a .257 would make a good choice especially if he chooses to branch out into deer, bear or other larger game. Now days it seems many of the younger generation like the black guns / AR style and there are some excellent rifles and calibers for hunting in that category, although they typically run higher. Although if you go the standard hunting rifle a rem model 700 is hard to beat on price and quality. If you scope it, a good quality 3x9 (leupold, burris, nikon) Leupold is tough to beat for quality, price and outstanding customer service should you ever need it.

A remington 700 BDL 30/06 with a leupold 3.5-10 should do him well for a lifetime...my dad bought me mine at 17 and 40 years later its still my gun of choice...lite and all kinds of ammo choices...my suggestion would be load up on ammo before feb 2011..documentation will required then..not a big deal though...internet ammo i think will stop also....X
