SoCal Lake Advice - Camping

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice on SoCal lakes specifically for camping, bass fishing, and maybe a little tubing.

I'll be meeting family there and have a motorhome and a 2 stroke bass boat.

Any suggestions?

The lower lake, or Lagoon, at Castaic has overnight camping, and you can use your boat with the TM only, or you can tube. Call the lake to verify their conditions and requirements.
Cachuma has camping and boating, but no tubing.

Shine on Cachuma unless you are in quagga free zip code. Pyramid is good as well.

My wife and I have camped at both Piru and the Castaiac lagoon. Piru was significantly better. There were no rangers at castaic, and the campground is not even really a campground but more of a dirt lot on the lower lake . It turned into a drunk fest with the police being called 2 times after a 2 AM brawl broke out. We ended up moving the rig to the dirt overflow area since it was way nicer. Piru has great sites and descent services, and is run like a campground. In the summer, there were definitely alot of questionable guys getting really drunk, but I heard that they made the park non alcoholic, so that would help. If you can, get a site along the top row so you have lots of room and no neighbors. Phil

This is what I'd do if I was you. It's hot and really, who want's to camp out in it? So go on the computer and type "Cool Cabins in Big Bear" in the search. Rent a cabin up in Big Bear where the weather is way better than the sweat box lakes down here. Fish for bass and trout in the mornings and evenings, tube and water play during the day and find a nice mom and pop's place for dinner. If your still up for some fishing do the night catfish deal after dinner. You'll thank me later because everyone in the family will be able to enjoy the trip, lots to do there!!

I agree the wood is an excellent campground in the foothills that offers bass fishing, trout fishing and tubing.

Im with Guy on this one... Id go to Big Bear. Fish for both bass and trout... go hiking, cooler temps, more to do i..e... Alpine slide, Zoo, mountain biking etc etc.... Just a good idea!

Piru looks awesome, but Big Bear looks good too. A cabin at Big Bear is prices $300/night so it might be worth the gas in the motorhome to go to Piru or Silverwood.

Big Bear has excellent RV camping.

The Serrano campground at Big Bear is the best one. Not on the lake, but a very short walk. Walking distance to the Discovery visitor center with short or long interpretive hikes and ranger talks at night for the kids. It's across the lake from town, so your in the woods, but a very short drive to town. There is also a cool bicycle path around the lake, so bring bikes.
