This is my first post so take what you will from it.

I would defenitly suggest Curado's for the reel. You cannot beat the performance for the money IMO. St. Croix rods are nice and vary in price, Abu Garcia is making some nice rods for a good price, i.e. Vendetta series.

Shimano Clarus Rods $69.99 with lifetime over the counter warranty, and Shimano Caenon Baitcasting reel $89.99.

Best combo going for for less than $160.

Give a look at the Powell rods. For 139.99 and 169.99 depending on size, you get a light, sensitive rod. The warranty is only 40$ and is lifetime.

As far as reels, you can't go wrong with Shimano - either the Curado or Citica. The Curado is my favorite reel today, and it looks great on a Powell rod.

What is your price range? How many combo's are you wanting to buy and where will you be fishing, mostly? If your budget is relatively tight, I would suggest buying used rods with good warranties. Buying quality reels used doesnt hurt also.

My reccomendation for value and performance would be Powells. As for reels, I prefer shimano. Curado E7's are awesome. I've heard good things about Citica 200E's as well. I really like the Symetre spinning reel too.

You can get a nice Shimano Citica on Ebay new for less than a hundo, buy an upgraded bearing from Boco bearings for less than ten bucks and you got a high performance reel hard to beat.
Powell make a great rod for the price. St. Croix also has a nice rod line up called "mojo" the rods are only $99.00

You could also buy an older used Citica or Curado cheap on ebay, send it to ReelEx and he will bling it out for you.
Ohh son!! That's a 4, 5 ,7 8, 12 punder son!!

I second that, but don't forget to look at the Dobyns Savvy Series in that same price range.

I am just starting out so i dont know what to start with(Heavy or light rods). I will be fishing Mead and Mojave mostly. The only rods I really know about are G-Loomis and to get a good set of those i think i will need to sell my kidney and maybe my first born.

Then check out Shimano Compre line. Awesome rod for $99 with no charge lifetime warranty.

Again, the new Shimano Caenon that will be released this Friday is an awesome 7 bearing reel for $89. It will absolutely do everything you want and more.

I really like the Team Daiwa Advantage reels. However they are 6.3:1. You will also need some 5:1's and a 7:1, go shimano Curado. Buying combo's, I don't recommend. You are going to need a drop shot rod, at least 2 MH utility casting rods, a heavy jig rod, a flip stick, a crank bait rod with a parabolic bend and a swim bait rod. You can do it with 7 rods. For your spinning reel I recommend 2500 size in Shimano or Daiwa. I use G.Loomis and Dobyns rods. All the new rods I am buying these days are Dobyns. I recommend investing in the best rods and reels you can afford and try to stay away from the bass marketing industrial complex new lure craze. That is very expensive. Keep it simple and good luck.

i have recently gotten a Dobyns Savvy Series and LOVE it. The rod has great action and is light weight and sensitive for a very reasonable price! Powells are in the same price range as well. The new Citica's are nice reels and aren't too spendy...I personally fish all Shimano reels now days...just personal preference. I've had Diawas and they did me well just decided to go all shimano.

You from Nevada and may plan to fish the Colorado river chain of lakes? if so, then take a look at the Mike Folkestad videos;
http://sportsreporttalk.blogspot.com/20 ... -just.html
Mike is a Shimano staff Pro, so he will promote thier products.
The important factor to remember is balance; what feels right to you.
Don't buy rod/reel combos on anyone elses advice; pick the rod/reel up and try it. What feels right to me, may not be right for you.
Several rods are on the market that meet the $100 to $150 range, reels are a little more. Lamiglas Excel series wasn't mentioned and is also a good choice in rods in that price range.

I would check out the Dobyns Savvy Series rods before I bought any rod on the market. I know if you try them you will like them.
