Re: Tow vehicle?
I bought my Ford F250 Diesel new in 2001. I haven't had any problems with it ever. It can tow with no problems. I get around 16 to 18mpg depending on how clean I keep my air filter.

I am not a ford guy but the powerstroke seems to be the best. I have worked on many buses with almost 300,000 miles and the majority of them hadn't had any major engine work except injectors. These buses sit idled more than driving to.
stay away from the newer ones. If they have a particulate trap/ exhaust filter don't buy one, any make. they are very expensive to maintain.

Re: Tow vehicle?
Dont know about the others, but G.M. Diesels with particulate traps have procedures right in the owners manual for the maintenance of these filters, and its nothing more than driving it down the highway for ten miles when the dash light comes on.

Re: Tow vehicle?
05 Duramax. I pull a 21' Ranger on Sat and a 29' Magic Wizard on Sundays. It's the 2500. 04-05 Ford blow up the Turbo's and the new ones are junk. Dodge the motor is great but the trany is junk. GMC with Duramax motor and Allison trany kicks butt. I use Royal purple in the coolant ( not weter water ) because you can mix it with anti freeze. In LV you can get vapor lock in your fuel line (to darn hot here ) the chevy has a manual pump in the fuel line to take care of it. Don't forget the fuel treatment, every 4 tank, keeps your injectors clean.

2007 GMC 2500HD Duramax- I only have 43,000mi. on it but it is awesome. The Allison tranny is fantastic. On steep grades you are not on the brakes all the time. Up hill you have all the power/torque you could ever want. I am averaging 17.2 MPG over the 43K and tow for many of those miles. It will get 20+ on trips with no tow. I pull a Z520 and its no problem on the St. Helena Mtns. to Clear Lake. Great truck!!

Re: Tow vehicle?
For a wonderful vehicle, check out the Dodge Sprinter. They are all Mercedes. Just towed 4,000 lbs 4400 miles through badlands, black hills, Yellowstone and over roads no-ones seen before in Utah. 22 mpg running without towing and I'd estimate 18 towing a bass boat.
Everyone loves them. The new RV chasis of choice. All cargo vans assembled in South Carolina and all Passenger vans assembled and shipped from Germany. Turbo Diesel.

I am a automotive tech and have always leaned towards Ford for trucks. With My observations over the the last 10 years I would have to go with a duramax , great motor and trans. The Fords have the best diffs chassis frames and suspension. I also think ford does a little better with the electrical systems. DO NOT BUY A 6.0 FORD unless you have very deep pockets.
