I live out here in Texas and dont drop shot much but am trying to learn it better. the current setup I have been using is a Powell drop shot rod with 8lb Fluorocarbon, a 4.5 hand poured zipper shot worm, and a 5/16th oz weight.
I was wondering what yalls favorite setup is for drop shotting?

Re: dropshot setup
I use my Dobyns 701 champion and extreme.. I love them both.. I like a soft tip that has good backbone down the rod. These rods can control quality fish. I was fishing some weed flats on clear lake, tossing a rico in between the grass patches with 6lb test. My cousin and I boated 18 lbs for our best 5 no problems.. I know 18lbs ain;t a bag of gold for most sticks here but for me it's enough to make me smile!!
Second on my reels i have a 2500 series reel. I have a few spools with 20lb braid toped off with 5, 6 and 8 lb leaders of about 25 yards. I also have another spool with just straight 6 FC. I like to try new things and experiment. the benefits of braid is you can always downsize your leader if the fish seem picky or if the cover your fishing gets a little more dense and for deep water. I like the bigger spools because it seems like i get less twist and more good behavior from my line. sometimes when the spools are to small FC coils off for me. I use to use a small 750 symetre size reel w/5lb when i first started fishing light line. I ended spending more time straightening out my coils and twist. it sucked. with the bigger reels it hardly happens.
Have fun, experiment, dropshoting is a great tools, you just got to be creative.

Re: dropshot setup
Really need a little more info on the type of water you are dropshotting. However I do use a Powell 702 for just about all DS fishing. Depth, cover, color of water.I usually do just fine with Trilene 100% fluorocarbon, its strong stuff. Fish as light a weight as you can. Sometime you need to just drag it back to the boat, other times let it sit(still or perhaps shakin). Try some sort of straight tail worm in what ever color you like for that body of water. I find the Zipper Worm Company 6in Shakin Worm in Aarons Magic a great color just about anywhere. I also use aqlot of 6 in straight tail worms, same color, and also some shad patterns.
Fishing should be fun.

I'm liking my Dobyn's 702 Casting rod with a Shimano 50 MG 4 pound berkley 100% fluorocarbon line when it's really tough or I'll use braid with a 6 or 8 pound leader with a double uni-knot for the connection. I like roboworms and berkley triple hand pours, sometimes a tiny brush hog or a Phenix Saturn Worm. I like the mojo pineapple swivel weights. I'll fish this anywhere from the bank to 80 feet.
