Tailspins...

Post by millsryno »

Can somebody school me on tailspins? I have never used them before and it seems like that is what is working at DVL. I want to get out there and try them out. I've got a $25 gift card to use at basspro.com for them.

What brand/colors should I buy?
What size rod/line should I use?
What is the general technique?

Thanks,

Ryan

Although I prefer Markey's Tailgunner

this is the next best thing from BPS... go with this...

Baits are inexpensive, but you need to replace the hook.

Technique is simple... chunk and wind. Vary retrieve to trigger strikes.

So your not actually jiging it...more reeling it in with varying speeds?

I ordered some of them off BPS. I got a couple 1/2 ounce ones and a 3/4 ounce one. I might have to order some of those Tailgunners after I get the hang of these.

It's just like you are fishing for sand bass

throw out.. let it sink to the bottom.. twitch bait once to: get blade moving and to trigger initial strike. Reel 1/4 of the way back to the boat then let it free spool back to the bottom. This is where most of the strikes occur, repeat for 1/2, 3/4. Reel slooooowly to keep the bait in the strike zone.

Why this bait and the Marky's tailgunner? Because they both use a premium ball bearing swivel. Other tailspins use plain 'ol swivel that eventually wears out after 1-2 days of use.

Brian has it right. That tailspin is a good one. The Markey Tailgunner is a little different though. It swims like a fish even though it's a hardbait. Tough too. It will catch bass all day long.

Cast it out near your cliff or drop off. Count to 5 before you reel - let it go down, it swims down. Then you can do what the occassion calls for - jiggin', bouncing, fast or slow retrieve. It will do what your hands tell it to do. Slow retrieve it under an overhanging tree, it will respond. Throw it up on the bank and flip-flop it back into the water...handicap it.

Markey's Tailgunner is awesome! they make them in 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz sizes, http://www.basscatcher.com/ . I like the 1/2 oz model in the grey/green shad or green shad...like mentioned, the stainless bearing swivel (unlike the standard "clevis" set-up) and chip-proof paint are what makes this bait so good. The best 2 ways to retrieve them is to slow reel them just off the bottom, the high-quality swivel allowes for a super slow blade turning retrieve so you can keep the bait in the right zone....or slow-pumping them up and down up and off the bottom and back down....I've caught bass burning them down the bank too........anyway you fish them, buy Markey's Tommy Tailgunner....oh yeah, the back blade swivel let's you change the size of blade you prefer to fish....another option to make it the one to have.....I'd use that gift certificate to purchase some good flourocarbon or something! :D

I think the McSpin and the Markeys Tailgunner are both great baits. I got a couple 1/2oz Mcspins this weekend and liked them alot. Match the bait size right now and are priced right! There are also some very nice Japanese baits out there that have all the good quality components but the cost can range from $12 to $20 each!

I do believe they are sold at Anglers Marine. Also no web site that I know of but maybe Mr. Mc Spun would be able to give you a better sales pitch online. Or maybe not. I am sure he will chime in to help you out. Just teasing you a bit Gary

No problem Ray,

No Website yet. They are sold at Angler's Marine and Last Chance tackle. Hope to have some brosures made up so people can see all of the 22 colors available.

The land of OZ Is his personal play ground
We all know how he likes to play with the munchkin's
But instead of wearing Ruby Slippers he wears camo pants

I dont care who ya are thats funny right there!

Actualy Brian is pretty damn good with the tail spin, I wish I would have paid a lil more attention to his detail with them. I am going to start to use it more this year esp on these schooled up spots.

Good Post!
