stockers hit a swimbait?

Post by pigskin »

Me and a friend were fishing cachuma the other day. We saw some people doing really well on the trout.
My friend was throwing the larger gunfish and he caught a trout about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. We have never seen a trout hit a topwater bait. I'm throwing a bowstick and can't get bit as there was a couple boils as the sun was setting. So I change to a bull shad thinking the bass were on the shad, no bites I tie on a freestyle shad and on the first cast a small blowup and I miss it. I then preceded to miss 2 more small blowups on this bait. I was thinking about the missed strikes as we drove home and noticed that the blowups were not very big. So I was thinking that maybe it was trout that was blowing up on the bait.
Do you think it could have been trout?

They do plant big trout at cachuma and just had a plant 2 day before.

Thanks for listening guys!

And thanks for the new forum!

i bet it was trout yes. Cachuma has some big trout!

I have had big trout in that lake come up and bite the tail and smack my 6-7" ospreys before, so its very likely!

Its pretty cool seeing a trout eat a topwater bait! had 1 giant 5lber at Lake Casitas eat my Sammy before, it was a very small splash and then a crazy fight.

It could've been a trout or a huge bluegill!!! I have caught a trout on the FS shad and my buddy caught a monster bluegill on the FS Herring.
Stay thirsty my friends!

I threw a nine inch Plunker at Lake Pyramid just after the plant there. I see a boil and I cast right next to it then BAM it gets a hit. So I reel I feel nothing ,I reel again nothing. Then I and my buddy just laugh our selfs sick the trout hit the feather of the Plunker. The trout was maybe a pound. Good luck to all CHIEF

The biggest trout I've ever caught was at Cachuma and weighed just under seven pounds. I have to admit that I was trolling the dam with a frog patterned needlefish with leadcore line out to just over eight colors. The fish was deep, and released unharmed.

That was a long time ago, probably twelve years ago or so. Since then I have fished that lake alot and my brother will attest to this... if you want to catch big trout at Cachuma, throw baits intended for bass. As someone already posted, those trout in Cachuma are both big and dumb.

And yes, they will smash topwater baits with fury. We landed a sizeable trout there with an old Arbogast 'Jitterbug', our own 'walking shad', and rapala's fished slow to make them wake. We were trying to catch bass, but wound up with the trout.

The trout there are aggressive and there are alot of them. Goofy enough as it is, we caught alot of bass there with trout tackle during trout tournaments we have fished there. Bass have hit 'needlefish', 'Panther Martin's', and even 'Pistol Pete's'.

That lake is great for all kinds of fish including big panfish as well. No doubt about the topwater trout bite though. Best of luck... ChrisR 8)

Trout love to slap at anything, but their mouths aren't usually big enough to eat a lot of bass lures. Nonetheless, I have caught countless solid trout up to three pounds over the years at Lake Silverwood on spinnerbaits and the dropshot. Recently, I have been catching the 3-4 pound pink holdover trout at DVL on spinnerbaits. I'm averaging about one big trout per day while fishing for bass. They put lots of 6-10 pound trout in DVL and they love to track my Huds to the boat, but they never commit.

About a week ago I had about a 3# trout take a swipe at my 8" hudd. Not sure what he was thinking no way he was getting the whole bait in its mouth.

I used to slam Lassen trout at Contra Loma on small cranks. Had a brown destroy a foot ball jig fishing ledges at Oroville. Ever go to Tahoe to slam Lake Trout on swimbaits? No? You should. Im going to try castaics through the ice this winter up here in Minnesota. ....Ice .... Cant wait to go back to Cali.

True for sure that bass baits and trout at Cachuma are a fun mix. We had a guy catch a trout here at Casitas on a buzzbait just three weeks ago. These recently planted "tail walker " trout from Nebraska are going to die like flies for a while as they are super aggressive. Yes, trout have small mouths but try this on 7-8 colors in the summer at Cachuma:

Troll 7-8 colors of leadcore with a 50 foot mono leader (6-8 lb) with a 1/3 oz. Rattling Rouge "floater" Chrome black back / blue eye with red spot on flank of bait....In the summer you troll into main lake coves mouths and then turnaround and troll out again. when the bait gets in line with both points on the way in and out you get slammed. When you clean your trout in the summer after doing this you will see that some of the trout will have 6-8 bass fry in their guts and still run down that Rouge.

This time of year.... rattle traps and wiggle warts slow small craw cranks down behind the island when it's raining..... I've sat out there all alone in some serious downpours and just plain messed up the trout in years past.

I moved my boat back to Casitas just before the Holidays and got out on Dec. 27th after the second planting of the Tail Walkers. I fished for Bass in the morning and caught 3 fish by 10:30 on senkos and worms so I drove over to the Wadaleigh arm to see what all the brew haha on these trout was about. I watched a kid on the bank land a two pounder but I had no success other than a 5 pounder followed a wiggle wart back to the boat but didn't eat. I moved the boat about 1/2 mile and started throwing the senko....Wham 4 pound rainbow.....I switched over to a dropshot after that fish and I caught 9 fish and kept the 5 biggest( 3 pound or better). Honestly it was a blast on my Loomis dropshot rod... :D ....I was using the small 4.5 Jackall flik shake and they seemed to like watermelon candy just fine... ...I'll be back on the water again this Saturday and I plan on having 5 more of the gorilla trout in my freezer. They are not those putrid tasting stockers from Filmore with no fins these things have a great flavor to them, fight like heck, and are in pristine shape with great coloration. Fine eat'n Boyz and Gurlz ... :!:
