swinmbait rod and reel
ise show have any good deals on swimbait rod and reel combo's? and what is a good one ? i am tired of throwing my swimbaits with my old stuff......
Re: swinmbait rod and reel
I would go with the Okuma Guide Select swimbait rod in either heavy or extra heavy. Great rods for a good price.

Re: swinmbait rod and reel
I do really enjoy my 301 Curado's and would recommend matching the rod to the weight of the bait. For the extra heavy stuff Powell makes a rod for 8-16 oz baits but the handle is a little short, I extended mine. The loomis BBR series rods are good for swimbaits too. For big Hudds the Dobyn's 806 and 866 if you can still get it. In all honesty I feel a lot of the swimbait rods dont really handle the heavier baits as well as they should when they are rated for it, but that 8-16 oz Powell does well for a stock rod. for a rod recommendation it would really help to know what you intend to throw on it. Also WB now has a swimbait section.

Re: swinmbait rod and reel
I use a new Curado 300 or E5 for on a Guide Select XH rod...this is good for Ospreys and Hudds ROF 5. For the bigger baits I use the Gloomis BBR 966 and a Shimano Calcutta 400...
All rods have their place...just try them out. I like the STOUTER rods because I don't want that fish to have ANY leverage on me. Never know if its a 3lber eating the swimmer or a fish over 13 eating it. Regardless you need STRONG drags and STOUT rods!

Also if your looking a little cheaper the Okuma guide select 7'11" M/H 3/4 to 3oz is a great starter swimbait rod. And as Mike said the Curado 300e is the one.

While your at the show take a look at the series of swimbait rods from Irod. There are 3 models. The Jr. is for the smaller 6-7" stuff, the Large is for the 8" hudd type baits while the Jumbo is for the giant 12" baits. All of the rods are super light weight, made to effortlessly cast a mile and have a life time warranty at only $149.00. Fishermans Warehouse should have the whole line in stock at the show.

Re: swinmbait rod and reel
Im a custom rod builder and just thought I would throw my favorite swimbait blank in the mix here. The blank is a Rainshadow Rx7-SW967. Its 8' and rated 15-25lb line and 3/4-4oz baits. I consider this the perfect "tournament swimbait rod" it can handle everything from La Slider type lead head baits up to Punkers and hudd rof 5. It really excels with all size slammers and triple trout type baits up to 8". I think to many rods in general these days have actions that are too fast. This rod is like a big cranking stick, loads up but has great lifting power yet is graphite and has a great lite "feel" to it. I dont want to advertise to much here because im not sure on the policies but I will say this. The blanks come with lifetime warranties and I warranty my work for 5 years no questions asked. I build with all the best modern components, handles, guides, etc. The stock HawgHustlers swimbait rod sells for around $150, customized rods can be more or less depending on components.
