Shocking fish?

Post by Ceaser »

I was at the ISE and the tank was FULL of donkeys they said they shocked up off one bank in the Delta! Wow... they were nice fish. My question is whats the rules on the shocking thing. Do you have to have a permit or can anyone do it and not harvest the fish? What if someone was using a device like that to pre-fish? I've seen some YouTube videos of tourney anglers on the Delta with questionable devices in the background. I have no clue what the rules are on this and was hoping someone could enlighten me.
Thanks
is that glitter!? Nice boat tinkerbell!

Electro shocking of fish, is illegal, unless yer DFG and/or are authorized by them to do so. It's no different than gill nets or snagging. Any activity witnessed of individuals doing so, should be reported imediately.

You need an SCP (Scientific Collecting Permit). A fish'n buddy of mine has one because he collects various species for state and federal entities....

These fish were collected by the DFG under permit. Jay said they shocked about a 20-30yard stretch and those were the fish that came up. Just makes you wanna quit fishing sometimes, knowing that all those fish are in 0-8 ft and you may have gotten one bite on that stretch.

I'm not so sure it matters! I would be willing ta bet, they coulda pick 100 simular banks in various areas of the Delta, and had the same results. Them fish are there, we just need ta git better at catching em! HAR!

Cooch is exactly right! I had the great pleasure of working for DFG for 10 wonderful years and whenever show time came around be it the cow palace, san mateo, stockton, sacto. etc. I was on that shock boat. It would make you sick to see how many 3 to 8 pounders there are in a 30 yard stretch in the Delta. And as Cooch mentioned, we shocked all over the Delta and it was the same results most of the time.

In fact I'll bet one of the best times Gary Dobyns had on a boat was when we took him out and shocked a stretch of Whites. We went about 50 yards and had to stop because we had too many toads to load up the fish tank at Cal-Expo. That year we had a 12 pounder in the tank.

One spring, we took our bassboats down there, fished a stretch of Fourteen mile for a couple of hours. Caught 2 or 3 bass, then fired up the shockboat which we called "Powerbait", and proceeded to bring up about 50 to 75 nice sized bass.

Now, you ask if shocking would help with prefishing? Well, I can tell you first hand it does not. Back in 1994 we found a group of fish in the very back of Beaver past the bridge. I would estimate about 500 2 to 5 pounders. Back then, most the tournaments went out of Big Break. I fished the Won Bass Pro-Am back then and I had the tournament won, yeah right....I made that long run, Had the whole area past the bridge to myself, and struggled to get a limit both days and It was one of my worst tournaments.

I did the same thing at Folsom. It would blow your mind to know how many huge largemouth and Spots we shocked. We just happened to shock a few weeks before a West Coast Bass pro-am and I couldn't wait to go and stick those fish. One day I didn't get a limit because I knew the quality was there, but they weren't biting.

I've got to go to bed, but if any of you have any questions about electro-shocking, shoot me a pm.

Take care, Rod Brown

I always wished my troller would short out on "High Bypass" and zap everthing within 25 feet.

Thats the problem for me with the new HDS units. Now I can really see the fish I'm not catching. Before, I had an excuse.

They sell them online for 389.00 or something like that. Takes a twelve volt battery. Says the bigger ones float up first and easier then the small ones. Friend of mine did some research and found this thing. Guaranteed it's illegal....Hmmmm....

my dad and I had the privelege to go with DFG to Casitas a few years back shocking for some DD's for the Bass Pro in Rancho. The amount of bass between 3-8lbs was insane but the giants were very very rare! All night, 3 hours of shocking all over the lake we got 2 big ones, 10.5 and a 13.5lbers. For covering probably 10 miles worth of shoreline....it was sad! That's when I knew the big ones were depleted! we went out at night as well...

Priviledged as I am to run an e-boat and get paid for it, the angler in me has learned one thing..............e-fishing is an ego check if there ever was one.
