Havasu boating

Post by jazzwannabe »

Generally speaking, how rough, windy and crowded is Havasu? Is it considered a "big water" lake, the kind you don't really want to test in a 17-foot Tracker with a little motor?

There is a lot of water out there for the small boat. I keep a 17 foot G3 out there. I would not run all the way south from Windsor on a windy day but I can pretty much pick my area to fish and get there.

Like everywhere, it changes day to day. If you're concerned about big water, just stay below the main lake. You can launch out of Cattail Cove down south or Havasu Springs, which is down by the dam. There are lots of coves, flats, walls, anything you want to fish below the main lake. Whatever you do, don't throw ripbaits on the wall at Sand Point Marina or any of the many long rocky points around Sand Point Marina.

I've also heard it's too hot to fish it on summer days.

If you are camping, yes that would be a problem. If your're hoteling it, you can fish until 10sh then go back out 6sh. The topwater bite is awesome first light and last light. I prefer RioRicos and buzzbaits. Then just fish the regular stuff the rest of the time. When they used to have the Top Six tournies there in September, we could throw buzzbaits all day long.
