Punching with Bubba Dropshot
Punching with Bubba Dropshot
I am a punching novice. Last summer I began to experiment with a heavy duty dropshot rig for punching. I use a flipping rod, 50# PowerPro, 3/0 EWG tied with a Palomar, and a 1-2 oz bank sinker. The heavy bank sinker is great for punching through the heavy cover. Anyone have any thoughts on this presentation vs. a standard punching rig with weight above the bait, snelled hook, etc.?

If it works for you, and I see no reason it shouldn't, go for it..I take it you are not nose hooking the offered bait..

Take a kid fishing, and don't forget about us older kids either..
Re: Punching with Bubba Dropshot
It might work, but I bet you get a bunch of bites on your sinker. Next time you miss a fish look at the bite marks on your sinker. Punching is typically a reaction bite and the fish will eat the 1st thing that comes through the mat.

Punching is one reason I make a one-ounce QuickDrop Dropshot sinker. This is the only time I tie an overhand knot after slidingon the line clip. Goes in and comes out much easier than using a bank sinker or other styles.

Do you often do heavy duty dropshot punching similar to what I described?Marc wrote:Punching is one reason I make a one-ounce QuickDrop Dropshot sinker. Maybe I'll try TX rigging the sinker!Mike wrote:It might work, but I bet you get a bunch of bites on your sinker. Next time you miss a fish look at the bite marks on your sinker. Punching is typically a reaction bite and the fish will eat the 1st thing that comes through the mat.
Re: Punching with Bubba Dropshot
Not as often as if I were to live near the Delta, but enough to know how well it works. I also have friends who are doing well punching a dropshot.

a little birdie told me that the Miller Punchin Weights are HIGHLY effective for punchin through the thick stuff. the weight goes in and out of the grass with ease.
Re: Punching with Bubba Dropshot
those weight looks scary.. i've set the hook a few times missing the fishing and had the tungsten weight fly out of the water and smack me right on my glasses.. be careful when punching.. its fun but proceed with caution..ash wrote:a little birdie told me that the Miller Punchin Weights are HIGHLY effective for punchin through the thick stuff. the weight goes in and out of the grass with ease.
Re: Punching with Bubba Dropshot
Something tells me that 2oz of solid tungsten hitting you in the face is going to hurt no matter what, the great thing about the miller punch weight is that it comes in and out of the grass with ease, just jiggle it, just a little bit. As for a drop shot weight, I have tried the salt water torpedos, the balance of them makes them want to go sideways when punching so harder to work to get down through the stuff, the miller weight is balanced by the weight being heaviest in the middle putting the force on the pointy end. Give them a shot this season or check out the underwater video Danny has posted on his website - pretty cool stuff no matter what weight you are using.thukidad wrote:those weight looks scary.. i've set the hook a few times missing the fishing and had the tungsten weight fly out of the water and smack me right on my glasses.. be careful when punching.. its fun but proceed with caution..ash wrote:a little birdie told me that the Miller Punchin Weights are HIGHLY effective for punchin through the thick stuff. the weight goes in and out of the grass with ease.
