Ron Tobey - From Wreck to Check

Post by Bill Hutcheson »

So it's a Thursday afternoon. You've done your pre-fishing and the partner pairing meeting is just a couple of hours away.

BAM!!!

Out of nowhere, some knucklehead who was paying more attention to her texting as opposed to driving whacks you a good one. You have just been thrown a huge curve and it looks like your weekend is down the tubes.

Give credit where credit is due. Ron Tobey sucks it up, shows his mettle, and goes on to win the USAC Clear Lake Open and just shy of $9K after what would have had most of us calling it a day.

Congratulations on your win Ron.

Most people would have packed it up and went home after what you went through.
Great job Ron!

Was he able to get his boat back on the trailer and use that or did he borrow a boat?

Keith,

AFter sliding a good 50-75 yards down the street, that same boat went back on the trailer and was the boat that Ron fished out of both days in less than stellar weather. Sounds like it should be a commerical for Skeeter or something....

I think a lot us have felt his pain in some way or other, whether someone elses fault or our own. I was at Havasu and took my boat off plane just in time to hit a REEF dead on...I fished for 7 more hours with a two big gashes in the bottom of my boat and my bilge pump running non stop. Later found out the lower unit cracked and lost all of the oil out it which end of ruining the gears and had to be replaced...Anglers Marine was very happy to see me and my mess....they did do a great job to get it back to new condition.

As for Ron, he definitely needs to share his story with Skeeter.

First of all congratulations to Ron Tobey on your win at Clear Lake, I know that the mental part of having my boat do that would pretty much have been the end of my weekend, that speaks well of your comitmment.

Secondly - My hat is off to Hutch for going above and beyond the call of TD to take the pictures, find a mobile mechanic, and help get this angler fishing and back on the water. Your service is above and beyond the task of tournament director -great job Hutch!

Thirdly - Mike Tuck - third tends to be a theme for you on Clear Lake this year  Congrats my friend :!:

Great tourney and finish Ron Toby, thats mental toughness , fortitude and more. Hope the repairs go smooth with no costs to you. Wow I hadn't relized this happened so close to the launch, thats Jimmys tackle shop in the background.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!
