fish poisoning anyone ever had it?

Post by Scott Robertson »

I got finned by a largemouth in the thumb and I didnt think much of it, not much of a cut just a scrape. Hand began to swell up two days later hurting like an arthritis or tendenitis. Went to the doctor got antibiotics but they could not diagnose it for sure that it was from the fish fin. I later talked to my brother who skippers an ocean boat for a pvt owner he said you have fish poisoning, I have had it and seen it many times very common. He said to avoid it keep peroxide on the boat and if you get scraped or gouged dump the peroxide on it immediatley. But if you dont you just have to let it take its course and go away. Hand swelling hurting, motrin helps but it comes back. Any offers of relief would be a great. Put some peroxide on your boat. I have been scraped before and never had an incident.

"fish poisoning" I dont know but bacterial infection or e-coli  most definitely - I have seen guys stuck by poisinous fish like sculpin and its no joke they swell up right now there hands the size of bass ball gloves  But in your instance you had an open wound and the fish either had bacteria on its fins or in the water - heck at clear lake during the alge bloom the whole damn place is a petri dish for microbes - cleaning your hands often after any open wound is a good call espeically when handling fish - I have hydrogen peroxide in the boat for fish in the live well as well as First Aid - alcohol handy wipes are good too.

I have had the condition known as "fish poisoning" many times. I worked for many years as a deckhand on the party boats in Half Moon Bay and got stuck by rockfish spines on many occasions. It gave me the same symptoms that you have described. I never found a way to get rid of the pain other than let a few days go by and it went away.

As far as bass...I have been spined many times especially while culling. But I haven't had quite as much pain as I did with rockfish (aka rock cod).

I got it one time from scraping my heel (climbing ladder to wheel house in flip flops in bad weather). My ankle and foot swelled up like a balloon the next day. Dr. gave me cipro (super anti biotic) and it worked wonders. Swelling was almost completely gone by the next day.

BINGO! My sisters fiance used to get it a lot from working on sport boats..and my sister got stuck too and it happened to her as well. I really think its more or less a staph infection of sorts

Salmon and Light tackle rockfished in the ocean for years. Wash your hands in peroxide at the end of the day, then with soap. If you don't, all the scrapes and cuts will fester. It has always worked for us.

The only cure for this pain is the lip landing of a five pound plus fish within the following seven days!
After performing this feat you will still have the inflamation and some pain but you really wont give a damn about it anymore...LOL

Hope you feel better soon budddy!

Scott,

I doubt its fish poisoning because you have to catch fish for it to be that. Maybe your finger punched through the toilet paper and you got a case of the heebeegeebees
