Question for the rod builders about micro guides

Post by TDawg »

I have been thinking about having a couple of custom rods built and am thinking about having micro guides put on it. My question is how do these guides handle braided line? I am thinking about having a punching rod built, so that is why I am asking.

Thanks and good fishing,

I never used or wrapped a micro guide but from what what I've read they should be ok for most rods. However I don't see a good reason to use the micro guide on a punching rod. Small single foot guides, hmmm

I have been using micros exclusively for over three years with great results. I would not build another rod without them. In fact, i have modified several of my factory GLXs with micros. The key to micros is to sprial wrap them. To me, micrs and spiral wrap go hand in hand. I have built and are using micros on my heavy punch, frog and swimbait rods with no problems at all. The smaller guides are actually stronger since the frames are more rigid. If you are around the Modesto area, you are welcome to look at my rods and try them out. Harry

I fish all custom wrapped rods. I have a couple Phenix rods, that I've wrapped myself, and a couple Performance Tackle rods including a swimbait rod. BTW, Marc at Performance has got one of the best Big Bait rods that you could ever use. Performance Tackle wraps all of their rods with the spiral wrap method, unless otherwise requested, and they DO NOT use micro guides.

Anybody that uses Marc's rods would agree that they make a very excellent rod and is very light, too. A matter of fact, they have alot of requests from people that buy factory made rods with micro guides to change over to standard guides. Alot of people don't like them because some feel that they don't pass the braid/flouro knot very well.

But that's my 2 cents. Like my father use to say, "Opinions are like a**ho***s, everybody has one." The best thing is see if you know somebody with one and try it out, if they'll let you. Then you can decide for yourself.

+1 on Performance Tackle. They tie ALL my rods and they dont use micros. Marc tells me I would see no real performance difference. I have that kick arse swimbait rod you mentioned. Very tight.

I'm fairly new to rod building(about a dozen so far), and just wrapped my first micros. I like them alot. I just ordered 3 more blanks and will be putting micros on them. The one I have on hand is for blades, pitching and worming(suggested) I have also used it for crankin'. I'd be happy to let you give it a try see how you like the micros.

Just curious as to where you get your blanks. Haven't shopped around in a while and so any information you can share would be appreciated.

I get most of my stuff from Mudhole.com. They are great to deal with. Once had 2 blanks delivered broken in several places, they replaced them with no questions in 3-4 days. Also try rodbuilding.org for info and other suppliers
