OK, from a "Ford Guy"

Post by Colebass »

I have owned a number of Fords the past 20 years. I've been really considering a diesel truck or rig of some kind. I know about the 7.3 powerstrokes and now Ford had the 6.0, but have heard they are changing next year. I'd like your opinions on the Ford vs the Cummins. I have not really been a big fan of the Dodge interiors, but the motors are great.

If you have or have had one, chim in hear and give me some pros and cons. I will stay with the 3/4 ton, likely a crew cab.

Thanks in advance

If you are a Ford guy, buy a Ford. GM, Mopar, and Ford all have their ups and downs, but you'll never be happy in anything but a Ford because you're a Ford guy. Trust me, I'm a Ford guy, I just like them and don't feel as good driving another brand. Good luck on what ever you choose and don't be skeered of a gas motor either 8)

My Brother worked at a Ford dealership recently and apparently the new diesels Ford came out with in the last year or two are big turds. They have had major problems with them.
I think that is why their coming out with the new 6.0. It could be a big turd as well.
The diesels in like the 2000 models are just about bulletproof.
I would go to a Ford forum and see what they have to say.

I have an 02 Excursion with the 7.3. For a very large suv it is the way to go. Also the only one available with a diesel. At my dept, we have guys with cummins, duramax, 7.3 and 6.0. The chevys are definately quieter than the others. If I was goinging to buy a new diesel truck it would have been the chevy. Until the new mega cab dodge came out. After having the noisey powerstroke the cummins wouldn't be too bad. The extra room is great. Not too many people say "I wish the interior was smaller"

While I do not personally own a Dodge my father-in-law does. He has 3 Dodge Cummings (95, 98, 02) that he uses for his business and all the other trucks that he owns for the business are Fords. He has owned Ford and Chevey diesels and has gone back to the Dodge because of realibility and lower costs of maitainance.

I baught a 2006 Dodge diesel in December after looking at Ford and Chevy also. I went with the diesel because I was tired of my Chevy gas engine having to red line in the mountains towing the boat. After driving the diesel in the mountains it doesn't even compare to a gas engine. The only problem with it is my wife likes to drive it more than I thought she would. The 2006 Dodge diesel is a lot quieter than before also.

I have alway's been a ford guy and this year i was going to get a new truck.Well i wanted an F250 lariat 4x4 with a gas engine, well believe me they dont exsist at least the three counties i shoped.

So i finally took the diesel power stroke for a ride.I was also concerned about the noise but it was not bad at all.It just blew my mind the power compared to a gas motor. It has the 6.0 and it is 4 wheel drive and the ride compared to my other's was also impresive. As far as the dodge and chevy all i can say is those dodge's are the ugliest truck i have ever seen and they are NOISY.
The chevy's are very quite for a diesel.

ps i hear you man my wife wont stay out of it. :?

I bought a 2005 superduty 4 door from John at Northlake. first long drive was to Havasu towing my boat, Milage was 15.9 both getting there and coming home. couldn't be happier both with the truck and John. I have bought three trucks from him now, and will buy my next one from him. Dodges are loud, GM products are very nice, but I got a better deal with absolutely no hassle. Just tell him what you want and he'll tell you what the deal is. Great transmission, plenty of power, lots of room, nice ride, and it's ford tough :D :D

OK, I own a 2003 Dodge 1500 Hemi. I really love the power, but hate the interior. I have driven a Ford F150 and it was a smoother ride and the interior is far more superior in my opinion. I have seriously been fighting the urge to buy a F150, but the Dodge is paid for and taking on another car payment is just not my idea of fun right now.

Guess I'll chime in on this discussion. I bought a '99 F250 7.3 Powerstroke in 2000 w/ 40K miles on it. Now it has 171k on it and about the only thing that I replace that's not regular maintance is one of the power mirrors died.

I get ~16MPH towing and about 17 regular driving ... when it's time to get a new truck, Fords will be on top of my list again.

I've always been a Ford owner expecially in 4 by's but I was so disgusted with my last 150 that I looked at other makes. Settled on a Nissan Titan and couldn"t be happier. Awsome truck and I got 18.29 miles per gallon going from Lakeport to Sac town. Not to shabby for a 4 by.

off topic but I really recommend Northlake Ford...

Post by sTony »

I puchased my 2002 Ford F150 from John at Northlake Ford a couple years ago and I have been very happy with it. Even more so with the great support I get from John and his crew anytime I call on them.

He swings a great deal for all bass anglers looking to get a new truck and has worked out some great resales for users of this site as well.

On my way up there today for some service work as I got a recall notice on a part. Of course they've got them in stock and are ready when I am.

I'm running a 2001 F350 7.3 Powerstroke. I'm at 109K and the only thing I have done is regular maintenance. I'm running in the 16 to 19 mpg and I tow just about every weekend. For my money best truck on the road.

I've owned Fords all my life, till now, bought my neighbors 94 3/4 ton dodge he put over 200,000 on it , I put another 150,000 sold it to one of my drivers, hes still driving it. no engine work done to it yet, My new 2001, bought from same neighbor with 85,000 has 140,000 on it , just oil & lube. no other work. I have a friend uses his dodges in his bus. newest one has 400,000. The engine in my 1ton dodge is a smaller verison of whats in my freightliners & they all have about 1,000,000 miles on them.

It kinda looks like Ford, which I've been a loyal customer for all my life, (last count 26 new vehicles in 40 years) has finally left me at the salesroom door. They've ended prodiction of the vehicle that I like the most of all I've bought, the Excursion. I have a 2003 / 6.0 litter and have 65,000, just one minor injector problem, but when it's time to replace the "Big Dog" I'm shoppin' around for what I want and need, that is unless Ford steps up and designes something else to take the place of what I dearly love.

Welll, I just wish you heard it cause I was spankin em  The people you were roomin with are very cruel pranksters whom I will deal with when I feel the time is right. Look forward to meetin you at Clear Lake, I'm the short fat guy that they like to have fun with. Not exactly sure why Philip doesn't post anymore but It's probably because he's toooo busy doin all his bankin, what with him bein a really really wealthy rancher, who also hooks up with big dumb okie's to do fishin deals, and radio hosts that are world famous. Actually I find it hard to imagine that these people have time to harrass a guy such as myself, what with them bein so self absorbed  Hey, Just heard there are actually fish in Clear Lake, be a real change for me after havasu. See ya on the water :D :D

I own a 97 Dodge with the Cummins engine, I have over 200,000 miles on it and it till running strong. With that said I'm on my 3rd transmission and the 2nd rear end. The tranny in it now has over 130,000 mile on it , it was rebuilt by some one that under stands them and the rear end had over 130,000 miles on it before it was rebuilt.

My next truck will be a Dodge diesel if it meets my need. If your a Ford man and the Ford meets your needs then I would recommend the Ford. No matter what all of the major auto manufacture's have there faults just like the bass boats and out boards manufactures, pick your posion.

Being a non-boater, I was very impressed by all the diesels I have ridden in. The torque and low rpm power is stunning compared to my small v-8 F-150. The drawback as an every day ride with the noise and smell at home would be hard for me to get used to. My old neighbor used to fire his up then go back inside for coffee while it warmed up. Like an I-5 rest stop without leaving home! Whichever you pick get a few goodies. My favorite is the heated side mirror option a friends Ford has. No looking for a towel or using your shirt sleeve on a cold damp morning just starting backing up. Available options strong plus whichever brand.
