Cachuma Closures....

Post by Kelly Ripa »

I haven't posted my report yet however On Saturday the shriff's boat and the lake patrol boat were towing bouys over to Santa Cruz. They are going to bouy it off like it was years ago. Right between the stone out cropping and the ol'submerged tree....That isn't the only bite they are taking....No more running in where the cistern is.. as the bouy line from storke flats across the submerged island and across to where it used to start is almost all the way back in and they will be inforcing that area as an off limits area. I always like their reasoning or lack of it anyway. I asked if they were complaints of folks getting out of there boats along that stretch in Santa Cruz as I know it's privately owned and they said ...No, we just don't want anyone to be foolish and drive into something back there! I have never understood this lakes management. Oh well guys...I guess we're back to the old lake officially now! :x :x :x

From talking with a few people over the last few years it seems that they used to alternately close the back of Cachuma Bay and Santa Cruz Bay annually. Purpose was to enhance nesting grounds. I was told that this deteriorated to keeping the back of Santa Cruz closed due to laziness!! I don't feel it's more hazardous to boating than some other areas, but it is a prime spawning area. Pretty extensive shallow flat back there.

Makes me wonder what the real reasoning is behind the closure and who makes the decisions.

I wish the management would pay more attention to marking no-wake zones, removal of old, damaged, bouys and lines, etc.
